Editorial Reviews

At a mere two songs short of two complete shows and those two songs, Bertha and It s All Over Now, were played at both shows, so they appear on the set at least once Dick s Picks Vol. 20 is one of the more jam-packed (or is that packed with jams?) entries in the series. But this volume has a lot more going for it than just five hours-plus of music 1976 marked the return of the band to the road after a 20-month hiatus with Mickey Hart back in tow for the first time in five years, and it is a newly rejuvenated outfit we hear playing a mix of the new (Lazy Lightnin , Supplication) and old (St. Stephen and the rare Cosmic Charlie, which appears on the Landover show s set list for the last time ever). Perhaps the most sublime moment is the transition from Comes a Time to Eyes of the World (and then to the out-of-nowhere Orange Tango Jam) during the second set of the Syracuse show, but both shows are full of sparkling performances propelled by the newly reunited Rhythm Devils. Another keeper from the vaults.

I downloaded this collection along with Dicks Picks #33, which is also from a concert that took place in 1976, and play all eight discs thru a playlist on my iTunes titled "GD 1976" -- I stare at the visualizer for hours at a time, dreaming of what it must have been like to have been at a concert with both Donna Godchaux and Bill "Wolfgang" Graham also at the venue. I saw the Dead several times in Rutherford NJ and Foxboro Mass. but they weren't as good then as they are on these discs.

The price on this collection was appreciating faster than I liked so I found one in "used like new" condition for $20.

Here we have the Dead coming out of their break from touring which lasted almost two years.
In my opinion 1976 is a great year in the Dead's history that unfortunately seems to get over shadowed by the epic year of 1977, which to many Deadheads was the band's best year performing. I agree that 77 was a major peak for the Dead but they played some great shows in 76 like the pair of shows represented here on Dick Pick's volume 20. There are two almost complete shows here starting with 9/25/76 at the Capital Theater in MD & 9/28/76 at the Onondaga War Memorial in Syracuse NY.
I'm not going to try and review each track cuz that would take way to long, instead I'm going to highlight my favorite moments of DP volume 20.
While I like the 9/25 show I think the 9/28 show is where the magic is held. The sound quality for both these shows is pretty good, it's not great and the reader should be made aware that this wasn't made with the intention of releasing it to the public. Trust me when I say that the quality could be much worse. The lineup is what I call the "Keith & Donna era" with the husband/wife team of Keith Godcheaux on piano and keyboards and Donna singing backing vocals. Micky Hart had rejoined with the band on percussion and drum set augmenting the classic Dead with Jerry Garcia on lead guitar and vocals, Bob Weir on rhythm guitar and vocals, Phil Lesh on bass & Bill K on drums.
