On December 21, 1970, Elvis Presley visited the White House carrying a letter he'd written on American Airlines stationary to President Nixon. Worried about "hippie elements," Elvis requested in writing to receive credentials as a drug agent. "I have done an in-depth study of drug abuse and Communist brainwashing techniques and I am right in the middle of the whole thing where I can and will do the most good," wrote Elvis. White House aides arranged for Elvis to meet with Nixon later that day. Arriving to the Oval Office in tight velvet pants, a white shirt with huge standup collar and a purple cape, the King promised Nixon to fight drug abuse. Elvis then blamed the Beatles for promoting "an anti-American theme," surprised President Nixon with a hug and presented the President with a World War II-era Colt .45. Elvis then left the Oval Office with his honorary agent badge from the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.
