This review is from: Dickens, Dali and Others (Paperback)
These essays are second to none. Orwell was at his finest as an essayist and journalist.I am reviewing a collection of essays, yet I am baffled by the endless and, apparently, random collections of overlapping, badly organized Orwell writings.

The essays of Orwell represent a valuable time capsule of the pre-war period in England...a rich tapestry of cultural detail and controversy. On the train to frankfurt, I fell into frantic laughter as I read the essay on Dali. It is understated shock at the lunancy of Dali and the rich decadent culture that paid tribute to him. Orwell stood alone in standing up to the political correctness of the Right and the Left for the cause of objective truth...he suffered both times. The essay on Dali was censored, apparently "Skull Sodomising a Grand Piano" the title of a demented painting, was too much for the culture of the thirties. The Left never apreciated Orwell's true account of communist deceit in Spain.

The essay on cartoonist Donald Mc Gill also is interesting social commentary on the ribald postcard art common to this day in Germany.

The book itself has no contextual editing to inform the reader about the surrounding facts and controversies related to the essays. We are left to guess about the reasons the subjects were controversial when written. The preface is only a paragraph long. The bad editing of Orwell's writings is common in other collections as well- in this case maybe it helped lower the price of the book.
