I am comparing these pants to the Cherokee brand I got from Target.

The good:

The knee reinforcement is a solid patch inside the knee; it may peel a bit but it doesn't catch the foot on the way down like the side-to-side band sewn into the Cherokees.

I am comparing these pants to the Cherokee brand I got from Target.

The good:

The knee reinforcement is a solid patch inside the knee; it may peel a bit but it doesn't catch the foot on the way down like the side-to-side band sewn into the Cherokees.

The material is durable, if a bit stiff, and the pants look ironed even though they are not.

The pants are plenty long enough for the size, which is great for my tall son. The waist seems proportionate to the pants size to me, but my son is rather slender for his height, so these pants may not work for huskier boys.

The bad:

The waist is elastic but not adjustable. You can't buy these on the large side and adjust them down until your child grows into them, so their life span is shorter than adjustable-waist pants. This is a big problem for us.

The elastic waistband plus the stiff material creates a scratchy, spiky feel in back. So unless your child's underwear rides slightly above the waistband of the pants, the waist can feel uncomfortable in back.

The Cherokee pants are less durable, and they have that awful flimsy band of fabric sewn into the knee that catches your foot on the way down. But they are softer and more comfortable, and have an adjustable waistband. For my purposes, I prefer the Cherokee over the Dickies. But only slightly.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waist too small, July 23, 2010
This review is from: Dickies Boys 2-7 Flat Front Pant - School Uniform (Apparel)
The waist size on these shorts in a size 5 is small.

I always purchase adjustable waist shorts for my son because I need to cinch them in to the 3rd or 4th button (GAP and Lands End uniform shorts). Although he is average height and weight, he cant keep up sweatpants etc.....
These shorts were snug around the waist with no adjustment.
The fabric is stiff.
The cut is very cute though..

These shorts would be great for somebody who is looking for "Slims" even though they are not marked as slim.

My son is 44 inches tall and weighs 42 lb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for your little worker, November 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased these for my 'non-stop' 7 yr old. He hates to wear jeans, really wishes to wear shorts all year long, even though we live in NY. My 7yr old LOVES to work on our farm. I told him these were 'Dickies' and Dickies are WORK pants. He now wears them every day. I had to order more. They look like special dress pants. They are stiff, but perfect for us since he fully intends to wear them while going to school and working in the barns! I love that they are stain resistant. If he spills milk on them before school, the milk rolls right off them. No one will have any idea what these pants go through by the end of the day! LOVE these pants and so does my non-stop 7 yr old! We bought the shirts as well and he loves them. What a spiffy little farm boy I have!

1.0 out of 5 stars Slim size is much too slim, May 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I ordered these for my son who wears a slim size 4. Gymboree and Wal-mart pants/jeans in Slim 4 all fit him well but usually still need to be adjusted to the tightest fit, due to his extremely small waist. Unfortunately, these pants did not fit around his waist at all, as they were too "slim" even for him. I can't imagine how they would fit any child, if my son can't wear them. The length was true to his size, but he was never able to wear the pants because he couldn't zip or fasten them around his waist. Unfortunately, there is no way to adjust them to fit his small size, so this was a wasted purchase for us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great pants that hold up well, March 28, 2011

These pants are perfect school pants. They fit well, wash easily, and the reinforced knees give them a lot of extra shelf life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Like them!, February 7, 2011

I wasn't sure what to think reading the reviews but I needed hunter green pants for my son's school uniform. The ones sold at the school were swimming on him as he is slim. The quality is good. The pants are made of a stiff, heavy fabric. The size is slightly small. For example, my son can wear size 4 or 5 pants. He always wears adjustable waists. The size 5 slim fit him perfectly. I thought I would order the 6 slims next just to give him some growing room. So maybe order one size up, or if your child is not VERY slim, don't order slim as the waist is snug.

4.0 out of 5 stars Durable pants for on-the-move people, October 27, 2011

My son tends to play hard, and these pants make sure he doesn't hurt himself (too much). The reinforced knees make a big difference when he falls (or gets shoved) on the playground. My only problem with the pants is the front metal closure broke off after my son wore them for a few weeks. He has several pairs for him to wear for each day of the week, and only one pair broke, so hopefully it was just a fluke.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great uniform pants for school, June 20, 2011

I bought 4 pairs of these pants for my son's kindergarten year. He is very hard on clothes and I am pleased to say these look as good as the day they were bought. He is a skinny 5-6 year old so these worked great for him. These are the first pair of pants I will be able to pass down to his brother in quite a while as he usually rips holes in the knees. I highly recommend these!
