I've had my share of listens to many Dick's Pics and this is, undeniably, one of the best, highest quality, most jammin', rockin', and groovin' Dick's Pics in existence -- why has no one ever heard of this one??

The most notable difference between this February 1973 set and all the great late 1972 sets now available is the inclusion of a fantastic new song that would be recorded and released on WAKE OF THE FLOOD in the Fall: "Eyes of the World." "Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo" was already being played in the Fall of 72, including at the 9/17/72 Baltimore Civic Center show -- Dick's Picks 23 (see my 5-star review). This is a great 4-disc set with the 2/26 Lincoln show and the 2/38 Salt Lake City show, but lacking in any stunning sequences that would lift it up to the top level 5-star category.

Of the first set songs the standouts are "Loser," "Jack Straw," and "Sugaree." Much of this material just doesn't impress me that much under the best of circumstances ("Don't Ease Me In," "Looks Like Rain," "Loose Lucy," "Mexicali Blues," "He's Gone," "Row Jimmy Row," "They Love Each Other"). "Loose Lucy" is much slower than it would be by the time it was recorded for 1974's MARS HOTEL. "Box of Rain" is a great song, but this live version is not great.

The jams are quite good -- "Playing in the Band," "China Cat>I Know You Rider," "Dark Star>Eyes of the World>Mississippi Half-Step," "Not Fade Away>Goin' Down the Road>Not Fade Away," and "Truckin>Other One>Eyes of the World>Morning Dew," and they make this Pick well worth hearing. These are some of the earliest "Eyes" to be played, and it already sounds great. The "Morning Dew" from Salt Lake City is one of the standouts of DP 28, stark, slow, and moving -- not as powerful as some, but crushing in its quiet intensity.

I've been listening to this while on the road, and it makes great driving music!

Take note -- it has been reprinted and is available from the Dead's online store for a better price.

I have put together complete lists of Dead & related solo and side project releases from 1968 through 1977:

The Dead (1968>1969): Pranksters & Other Ones
The Dead (1970>1972): Cosmic Cowboys
The Dead (1973>1974): Eyes of the World
The Dead (1975>1977): Estimated Prophets.

This review is from: Dick's Picks, Vol. 28: Pershing Municipal Auditorium, Lincoln, NE 2/26/73 & Salt Palace, Salt Lake City, UT 2/28/73 (Audio CD)
This is one of my top 5 or 6 DP's. Absolutely stellar jams throughout. Singles performed tightly/well include: Don't Ease Me In; Loose Lucy (fast tempo); They Love Each Other; Greatest Story Ever Told; Miss 1/2 step; NFA>Goin Down The Road>NFA; Cold Rain & Snow; Beat It On Down; Box Of Rain; Sugaree; China>Rider; Jack Straw; Big River; Morning Dew; Row Jimmy and many more! Best part of release are stellar performances of Dark Star>Eyes>Miss 1/2 Step;and Truckin'>The Other One>Eyes. [...]
