William Safire calls it "The most exciting linguistic project going on in the United States," and I'd have to agree. Dictionary of American Regional English is a corker (thing of remarkable quality or strength). There's nothing cheesy (low-grade, cheap) or cold potato (dull, boring, or worthless) about it. It's such couthy (amiable) reading that it's hard to raise your conkhouse (lift your head) and agress (move forward and make progress).

Long in gestation, having been an original goal of the American Dialect Society in 1889, DARE is the result of 25 years of sustained work by its editor, with support from the NEH, universities, institutions, hundreds of volunteers, and 2,777 informants. Entries give definitions; pronunciation; alternative forms; examples; dated reference to sources, which include a unique questionnaire; and then clear indication of where the word is used. They say that American English has become homogenized, but it's not true and many regional words and phrases remain.
This is not a book to read end-to-end, but it's fascinating if you want to learn the complete etymology of a slang word.

This series of books are quite fun to use and to "look up" words and phrases to see if a certain word or phrase is in there or not. They are also quite fun to browse through. However, they are not very helpful when you actually wish to look up a word or phrase that you do not understand. For example, in the comics (Frazz) today 07/18/09, Frazz uses the phrase "gilding the lilly". I looked under lilly, gilding and guilding but I it was not listed. I did not know what the phrase
"gilding the lilly" meant and these books did not help at all. For the record it means, "To make superfluous additions to what is already complete." Unless you get a great deal on these, this set of books is not worth it.
