This review is from: Dictionary of American Regional English, Volume I: Introduction and A-C (Hardcover)
They say that American English has become homogenized, but it's not true and many regional words and phrases remain.
This is not a book to read end-to-end, but it's fascinating if you want to learn the complete etymology of a slang word.

This series of books are quite fun to use and to "look up" words and phrases to see if a certain word or phrase is in there or not. They are also quite fun to browse through. However, they are not very helpful when you actually wish to look up a word or phrase that you do not understand. For example, in the comics (Frazz) today 07/18/09, Frazz uses the phrase "gilding the lilly". I looked under lilly, gilding and guilding but I it was not listed. I did not know what the phrase
"gilding the lilly" meant and these books did not help at all. For the record it means, "To make superfluous additions to what is already complete." Unless you get a great deal on these, this set of books is not worth it. |
