Editorial Reviews

Review

"Anyone who has heard Dr. Walter L. Wilson in the pulpit is aware of how interesting is the content of his message and how refreshing is his approach to the subject. In his Dictionary of Bible Types, Dr. Wilson combines a wealth of fascinating material—both interesting in content and fresh in approach—most helpful to a better understanding of the Scriptures. Clearly this is a book which will make glad the heart of anyone who delights himself in the Word of God."
—Robert Walker

"Dr Walter Wilson has been a blessing to thousands in his quaint and charming explanation of Bible types. Here is a wealth of information that will astonish even good Bible students and will enrich the preaching and teaching of everyone who uses it regularly. We commend this book heartily."
—Dr. John R. Rice

"Few studies are as informative and enriching as that of Bible types; and few, if any, Bible teachers of today have studied the types as carefully and thoroughly as Dr. Wilson. With clarity of insight and cogency of statement he presents these intriguing and excellent studies."
—Dr. V. R. Edman -- Review

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as extensive as other works..., January 6, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Dictionary of Bible Types (Hardcover)
I first purchased this book under the recommendation that it was a quick reference to most biblical typologies. Although quick, it does lack in content and depth. I'm disappointed that the scriptural references are so few under each entry, and I'm disappointed that some entries are not as extensive as one might think (take "blood" for example). Some individuals may see this advantageous however. The brief explanations given are very poignant and refreshing to read because of their simplicity and short length.

My core complaint, however, is the lack of scriptural index. With thousands of verses referenced, a scriptural index would be inestimable. On the good side, it is a cheap book, and quite handsome. I recommend it for those beginning a study of biblical typology (because it is easy to follow and simple to read). Another up-side to the book is that it is arranged in alphabetical order.

Two stars...

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for study, August 6, 2001

This book is very useful for studying many of the images/types/shadows used in the scriptures. Although you won't always agree with the definitions the author uses- even the ones he is dogmatic about, you can still appreciate the value of this book for personal reference and study.

There are some minor set backs though, such as the author seems to have forgotten to include a few symbols that you would think he'd include e.g. a trumpet (which is often used in the scriptures as a prophetic warning/judgment/announcement.) Also the author (although interestingly enough) makes what I consider some serious errors. For example, for the number "five" he says:

"every chapter number five in the bible contains some story of man's weakness and inability. For example: Gen 5: Although men lived many years, they must eventually die. Exodus 5: God's people in their weakness were crushed under their oppressors..." (p. 166)

Clearly, this is him reading into the text something that would not have been found until recent times when we started to label the Bible with chapters and verses as if it were poetry. However, it is interesting nontheless.

Overall though, I don't think you'll find many other books that set out to cover as many images/symbols/shadows as this book does, with accompanying verses and descriptions. This is a topic which probably only a handful of books sets out to cover, and Wilson does it well. Every student of the bible should have a copy of this on their bookshelf and I highly suggest you purchase a copy.

I GREW UP WITH A COPY OF THIS BOOK IN MY HOME AND HAVE OFTEN TURNED TO IT IN CONJUNCTION WITH WORD STUDIES IN MY BIBLE. THE INFO FOUND HERE IS DIFFERENT FROM ANY OTHER OFFERED IN STANDARD BIBLE DICTIONARIES AND STUDY GUIDES THAT ONE USUALLY USES; WORDS THAT ONE CAN'T LOOK UP IN THE STANDARD REFERENCES SUCH AS: SPIKENARD, SPICES, HERBS, FLOWERS & TREE TYPES MENTIONED IN THE BIBLE ARE FOUND HERE. THE LAYOUT IS CLEAR AND EASY TO USE. THE ARRANGEMENT OF INFORMATION IS ALWAYS CONCISE AND INCLUDES THE SCRIPTURAL REFERENCE(S).
