Book Description

The language of cricket is as complex as the game itself--quite a statement, given that Americans are, on the whole, mystified by the sport. But now, anyone wishing to appear literate and informed in the presence of skilled batsmen can turn to The Dictionary of Cricket for an indispensable guide to the language and the game.
Readers of this definitive and delightful mixture of history, etymology, and social comment will be able to amaze their friends with astute asides incorporating such terms as "featherbed" (a very easy-paced wicket offering no encouragement to the bowlers and providing favorable batting conditions), "Kookaburra ball" (a hard, resilient type of cricket ball widely used in Australia), and "boot hill" (a very close fielding position in front of the wicket, such as "silly point" or "forward short leg"). Providing full and clear definitions of each item, supported by extensive and entertaining examples of its use, The Dictionary offers coverage of historical and present day cricket terms; quotations from a wide vareity of sources, including newspapers from around the world as far back as the 18th century; technical, historical, and legal information relating to a term; and--invaluable for recent converts--ample line drawings to illustrate key concepts, particularly those relating to rules of play or techniques.
Whether or not they know a "googly" from a "yorker," The Dictionary of Cricket will bowl over anyone with an interest in international sport and British culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to the most civilised game in the world, June 18, 2000
By
William "williamnedblake" (Kansas City, MO, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Dictionary of Cricket (Hardcover)
Cricket, as most everyone knows, is 'the other bat-and-ball sport'. It's also the one that is more widely played than almost any other game on the planet, with the possible exception of football (or soccer, if you wish to be all-inclusive). Cricket is a very old, very beautiful, and very exciting game, and, having the long history that it does, there is a vast, rich legacy of terms, expressions, and phrases associated with it. These can be quite confusing to the uninitiated, especially in non-cricketing countries.

Enter the 'Dictionary of Cricket'. Mr. Rundell, who is noted simply as a 'lexicographer' - and cricket afficianado - on the jacket, has assembled a clear, effective, concise collection of terms both archaic and modern, highlighting them with extracts from a wide variety of cricket literature, most of which - particularly in the United States - would be otherwise unavailable. This book is a guide for everyone, from the interested amateur to the keenest follower of anything from Test matches to local county cricket.

My sole quibble with the guide, and one which certainly is not enough to diminish the book's value as a whole, is the illustration, which is confined to simple line drawings and diagrams - one generally expects better from Oxford. However, there are many other books out there if you want pictures. If you want simply the facts and explanations of everything every said about cricket, then this is the book for you.

I didn't like the book, I wish I had bought a different book but this book was totally boring for me. I don't know why I wanted it, I guess I expected more for my money.
