Compiled by the New Horizons Equine Education Center, this new dictionary of horse-related terms will be a useful reference for horse owners, riders, and anyone whose work involves equine vocabulary. It includes definitions for words relating to tack and equipment, anatomy, nutrition, behavior and training, and various breeds. Detailed sketches accompany many of the definitions. Though not as comprehensive as Vivienne Eby's The Horse Dictionary (LJ 12/95), which lists over 6000 terms, this volume includes not only illustrations but a pronunciation guide, both lacking in Eby's book. It is also easier to use than Maria Belknap's Horsewords (LJ 3/1/98), though Belknap's book, unlike this one, has listings of well-known personalities and events in the equine community. My daughter recently started a mentorship endeavor with an equine facility. I felt she needed to have this book so she would understand what her instructor was talking about. The book is outstanding and an invaluable tool in her program. She has recently purchased a horse and she looks up so much information so she can care for her horse properly. I cannot say enough good things about this book. Not just for the novice!

Student promting inspired this book,the students of new Horizons coraspondece corses kept asking when they were going to puplish a dictionary, and here it is. A great resourse for any one who is new to the world of horses.
