5.0 out of 5 stars A must for the writer's reference shelf August 6, 2005
Format:Hardcover
I am glad to see this wonderful reference work is still around, though I shudder at the cost of the hardbound edition. My name stamp inside the cover tells me I bought my copy on February 9, 1970, and the retail price on the front is $.75 (seventy-five cents, not dollars). Over the years I have found this not only an excellent source for reference, but also a source of entertaiment. This is a must for word lovers learning what were once common expressions. Q.B.S.M.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really helpful sometimes September 27, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Now and then while reading novels you run into foreign phrases which just aren't obvious or explained well. In know some German, but other languages are lost on me. This book really does a good job of helping you understand the meanings of many phrases. I bought it used from Amazon (relatively cheap) and it was well worth the money. If you read a lot, you might benefit from it.
