Book Description

Connecting words and phrases are essential for discussion, clarity and fluency in any language. French is particularly reliant on connecting language: also and in fact have around 15 equivalent words and expressions in French.
This is the first French-English dictionary to focus on this fascinating and crucial part of the language. The dictionary presents nearly 200 full entries in alphabetical order, including: de plus; et ce; or; c'est dire que; en fait; au total; voila.
Entries define, discuss and exemplify the whole range of connecting language in French. 2000 examples add further clarity and are chosen from a wide range of registers and mainly contemporary prose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful to those who want to improve their written French., July 13, 1999

This review is from: A Dictionary of French Connectors (Hardcover)
This dictionary is an excellent reference to connectors that would be useful especially when writing in French as a second language. It gives a list of some English structures and their translations, with more than one translation for each word because meanings of words vary with different situations depending on the nuances. This is just a small section of the book. The rest of the book contains French connectors such as "de plus" which can also be replaced by "d'autre part" and "d'ailleurs." There are explanation of the grammatical structure and use of the words followed by examples in written French. The book explains where the connector is often placed in a sentence and also gives a list of variants with explanations. Punctuation is also explained where needed.
