KENNETH M. ROEMER (B.A., Harvard; M.A., Ph. D., Univ. of Pennsylvania) is a Piper Professor of 2011, Distinguished Teaching Professor, and Distinguished Scholar Professor at the University of Texas at Arlington. His interest in American Indians and utopian literature began in the little town of East Rockaway, Long Island,N.Y., where his first baby sitter was a 90-year old Dakota, Little Moose, and a tenth grade teacher introduced him to Plato's Republic. He is the author or editor of eight books: The Obsolete Necessity (nominated for a Pulitzer in American history), Build Your Own Utopia, American as Utopia (editor), Utopian Audiences, Approaches to Teaching Momaday's The Way to Rainy Mountain (editor), Native American Writers of the United States (editor), The Cambridge Companion to Native Amreican Literature (co-edotor), and Michibata de Deatta Nippon (A Sidewalker's Japan). Native American Writers and The Cambridge Companion books received Writer of the Year (reference category) Awards from the Wordcraft Circle of Native American Writers and Storytellers.
