Book Description

September 28, 1994 0631168486 978-0631168485 1
From Aeneas Tacitus to Zhukov, this is the most comprehensive dictionary of military history and military science to have been published. It covers those people, battles and campaigns, wars, countries, institutions and weapons that have fundamentally affected the nature and development of warfare. It also has a particular concern with civil-military relations and the role of armed forces in society. From the Hellenic period to the present day, including the questions of chemical and biological weaponry raised in the conflict with Iraq, the dictionary has comprehensive coverage of military history for students, scholars, specialists and general readers alike.

Originally published in French under the title Dictionnaire d'Art et d'Histoire Militaires, the new English language edition is expanded and completely revised and updated. All entries now carry full lists of recommended reading, and bibliographies have been thoroughly updated to include the latest literature. Many bibliographical entries have been added, as well as accounts of individual campaigns and battles. A main feature of the book is its broad thematic entries on such topics as naval and air warfare, as well as strategy, ballistics and other specialized topics.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This work is a translation and expansion of the Dictionnaire d'art et d'histoire militaires (Presses Universitaires de France, 1988). Both French editor Andre Corvisier (Univ. of Paris-Sorbonne) and translation editor Childs (Univ. of Leeds) stress that this work concentrates on "important themes, topics, and developments within military history." As a result, battles and commanders are mentioned only if they made an important contribution to the art of war, and while battle narratives and biographies merit only short entries, conceptual articles are quite lengthy. The Clauswitz entry is approximately one column long, for instance, while the adjoining "coastal defence" goes on for several pages. Articles are arranged alphabetically and are signed by the contributors to either the French or the expanded English edition. Most contain suggestions for further reading, although some of these sources are solely in French. The scope of the work is universal but has a definite European emphasis. While this is a solid reference source, its focus may cause some libraries to pass on it, especially those that own Trevor Dupuy's Encyclopedia of Military History (HarperCollins, 1993. 4th ed.). Recommended for libraries with a strong collection in military history.

From Booklist

Translated from the French edition (1988) by Chris Turner and revised and expanded by John Childs, this dictionary complements R. E. and T. N. Dupuy's Encyclopedia of Military History (4th ed., HarperCollins, 1993). Corvisier's interesting introduction reviews the reasons for our disaffection with military matters and the school of event-based history. His purpose is to integrate military history into general history, striking the right balance between precise historical facts and general ideas. Ranging in time from the ancient Middle East to the Gulf War, this dictionary is a complete success and deserves a place in all library collections.

All entries are signed by their authors and promote interest and understanding. Brief bibliographies follow most entries. The text includes cross-references, tables, and rather pale black-and-white illustrations. A major contribution and the reason for this new work earning shelf space beside Dupuy is the essay-length articles on such topics as Glory, Nationalism, Pacifism, Popular Warfare, Military Symbolism. These essays promote understanding of ideas associated with war. Discussions of battles and military leaders point to their significance to military history and the advancement of military tactics. For example, the entry for U. S. Grant points out how his methods foreshadowed twentieth-century war and served as a model for "specifically American approaches to the conduct of war." There are also entries for countries, weapons, such concepts as Deterrence, and institutions associated with the military, such as Medical Services and Museums. The indexing is complete, including all entries, illustrations, proper names mentioned in entries, and cross-references. Highly recommended for academic and public libraries.
