Book Description

February 2005
Impressive and engaging aptly describe Michael Keane's in-depth collection of terms dealing with modern strategy and tactics. While other works remain focused on nuclear strategy or the Cold War, the thrust here is on modern terminology - such things as "axis of evil," "CNN effect," and "military operations other than war." Historical references, applicable quotes, and an outline of words by relevant topics create a fully realized treatment of the new and rapidly changing lexicon. While the contents are professional and accurate, the author is not afraid to inject relevant humor and color to make the book enjoyable to read as well as edifying. It is sure to be a welcome reference for defense strategists and concerned citizens alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Up to Date and all the old Standbys, March 22, 2005
This review is from: Dictionary of Modern Strategy and Tactics (Hardcover)
Each field soon develops it's own jargon, and strategy/tactics are not exceptions. This book is new enough to include "Department of Homeland Security," and such old terms as "honey trap."

I am particularly impressed with the completeness of bothe the entries themselves and the descriptions of those entries. As an example, his description of revolution in military affairs (RMA) is the most complete, the most understandable that I have ever heard.

Many of the entries have quotations to help define them. For instance under asymmetric warfare there is the quote, "If you're in a fair fight, you didn't plan it properly," Nick Lappos.

Under assault, "When the situation is obscure, attack," Heinz Guderian.

This book is great for the newer student...old hands will find it not too helpful, so that's why I only gave it 4 stars. Otherwise this is a great book for a person new to the study of military science, military history, or strategy and tactics. This is a new student reference "must have." A student will be amply rewarded when they want a quick definiton of "honey trap" "minimax" "RDO" or a quick biography of say John Von Newumann.
