Book Description

April 1996
The most up-to-date and comprehensive reference work available, 'Dictionary of Natural Resource Management' provides a single source of definitions of natural resource management terms. It includes more than 6,000 entries, many of them illustrated and annotated, and a detailed set of appendices covering conversion factors, geological time scales, and classifications of organisms. The body of the dictionary encompasses terminology from the traditional fields of forestry, silviculture, pest management, forest fire control, geology, pedology, engineering, and planning. In addition, there are terms from the emerging disciplines of landscape ecology, conservation biology, conflict resolution, and sustainable development planning. The field of natural resource management is expanding, attracting individuals and ideas from a wide array of disciplines. For effective communication to take place, it is increasingly important to know the exact meanings attached to terms used. The Dictionary of Natural Resources Management addresses this need.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The Dunsters have created a reference that will be valuable to students, scientists, editors, and other who work in an environmental or natural resource area. Their attention to details makes this work easy to use. It was a pleasant surprise to see the three appendices, which contain information that one often needs in a hurry but can never seem to find right away. - Environmental Network News This monumental work is a "must have" addition to the desk of resource management professionals, scientists and administrators. - William Fullerton, Forest Forum Julian and Katherine Dunster’s new Dictionary of Natural Resource Management helps bridge the gap between forestry and other fields in natural resource management. - Canadian Silviculture Magazine

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful collection of technical terms and jargon., February 19, 1999

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Dictionary of Natural Resource Management (Hardcover)
A helpful collection of technical terms, jargon and factual information with a homely seasoning of opinion. This book is a useful glossary that helps practitioners in any natural resource management field keep abreast of the language of separate but related disciplines. Among other fields covered this dictionary encompasses terminology from ecology, pedology, mycology and geology. There are plentiful illustrations and invaluable conversion tables for the most obscure of measurements. The co-authors are both certified arborists and you can be sure that arboriculture is well represented in this book. There are also some strange metaphysical diversions taken; why is the entry on core shamanism so substantial? Is there perhaps some subliminal message here?
