The authors have almost achieved their stated goal of producing a clearly written, easily understood work aimed at the general public. They include almost 3500 financial terms, defined in plain, everyday English, generally with pertinent examples and often with an explanation of both sides of an issue, e.g., adjustable rate mortgages. Within definitions, terms that may call for further definitions are capitalized, as are numerous see and see also references. The well-written definitions merit a strong recommendation, but unfortunately, there are many dead ends in the cross-reference system. For example, the full-page definition of adjustable rate mortgage gives a see also reference to the two-sentence definition of the synonym, variable rate mortgage, but not the reverse. The other problem is the $70 price, though a paperbound edition, presumably less expensive, is planned for 1993. This fills a real lacunae in the area of personal finance; a quick check of Books in Print Subject Guide for the three pages under Finance, Personal found no dictionaries or encyclopedias. John Downes and Jordan E. Goodman's Dictionary of Finance and Investment Terms (Barron's, 1991. 3d ed.) covers many of the same terms for only $9.95, but it is more academic. At a lower price, with the cross-reference problem corrected, this would be a very good reference tool.
