Useful, accurate, and nasty,
By Rob Rosenthal (rrosenthal@babson.edu) (Boston, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dictionary of Polish Obscenities (Paperback)
This book is full of deliciously vulgar phrases. I wouldn't recommend actually using them unless you want a black eye, but as far as I can tell, having spent a summer in Poland, they're mostly accurate and up to date. The author also provides many literal translations, which are usually the funniest phrases in the book. I was surprised to find that the book has almost no religious profanity. This seems strange, given that Poland is about 95% Catholic, and the author doesn't indicate if it's an omission or if there simply aren't any such curses. I also would have liked a scale of some sort to indicate which phrases were obscene and which were merely naughty. Still, it's a fun book, and if you've ever been ripped off by a Warsaw cab driver it's a useful one too.

I gave the book to my dad and he did not know what to think. It started out slow but by the middle of the book he was laughing out loud.

Quite Funny,
By Sinner Saved by Grace (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dictionary of Polish Obscenities (Paperback)
This little book had me laughing out loud. The best part is the sayings and examples of use, which when translated into English are pretty funny and often make sense only in a weird sort of way. Some examples being "The saints fart too" and "Even the priest farts by the altar" (there were a lot about farting, or "the beetle") I am married to a Pole and she thought it was funny too, although she's now warned me to be careful using these words and phrases... apparently some of them are quite offensive, and it's easy to throw these around once you learn them, and not take them seriously, when you don't speak the language. So buy it if you want a good laugh, be warned!
