Book Description

1998
In English we often say: "To carry coals to Newcastle.? In Spanish, they say: "Echor agua en el mar," which means to throw water into the sea. The metaphors are different but the meaning is the same: to do something that's absolutely unnecessary. Where we say, "Barking dogs seldom bite," the Spanish speaker is likely to say, "El gato maullador, nunca buen cazador." A meowing cat is never a good hunter. English and Spanish proverbs are only occasionally the same in both languages-but proverbs everywhere speak to the same subjects. Love, hate, money, poverty, men as they are seen by women, and vice versa: these are the universal subjects for memorable sayings in both English and Spanish. Here are approximately 2,500 famous proverbs-some in English, some in Spanish-all with translations and where appropriate, with their approximate equivalents in the opposite language. Many cross-references make looking up related proverbs fast and easy, and many proverbs come with information on their Latin, Italian, French, and other origins. Language students, translators, and interpreters will find this book a handy quick-reference source, and everybody interested in the cultural bridge between English-speaking and Spanish-speaking peoples will find much to fascinate them in these pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very handy for bilingual translators and interpreters, April 24, 1998
This review is from: Dictionary of Proverbs, Sayings, Maxims & Adages: Spanish/English and English/Spanish (Spanish and English Edition) (Paperback)
I found this dictionary to be the first of its kind. A truly bilingual work which is "the" aid for translators and interpreters of the English and Spanish language who are interested in sayings and proverbs and the wisdom behind each of them adapted to the Anglosaxon or Hispanic cultures.

5.0 out of 5 stars A handy and quick guide for biliguals or students., July 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Dictionary of Proverbs, Sayings, Maxims & Adages: Spanish/English and English/Spanish (Spanish and English Edition) (Paperback)
This dictionary stands out because the translations are not literal, but adapted from the culture of each of the two languages: English and Spanish. Eg.: "Tomar el rabano por las hojas - To put the cart before the horse".

This review is from: Dictionary of Proverbs, Sayings, Maxims & Adages: Spanish/English and English/Spanish (Spanish and English Edition) (Paperback)
This book goes beyond merely listing linguistic equivalents of sayings and proverbs. It offers interpretations and insights into the nature and origin of the proverbs that reach across a language spectrum that includes Latin and French. This is excellent for the student of the languages, but translators should not expect a comprehensive collection of sayings and idioms since there are only about 2500 sayings listed here.
