The entries help explain the terms used in Shakespeare's texts and in their execution and so provide the historical context required to give the reader a full background of the term. This feature sets the dictionary apart from others on the same subject that concentrate either on single plays or on biographies of his characters. No other title explains so great a range of theatrical, historical, and "Shakespearean" terms.

The compact and helpful reference work consists of 1500 alphabetically arranged entries providing basic information about Shakespeare's plays, poems and main characters as well as brief descriptions of Elizabethan theater, theater companies, and production methods. McConnell, an editor and lexicographer, includes clear definitions and terms commonly used in literary criticism as well as discussions of Elizabethan society and history. The description of each play includes a brief stage history and a synopsis of the plot. A supplement includes a map of London theaters in Shakespeare's time, a chronological list of the Bard's plays, a short chronology of his life and time, and a list of English kings and queens mentioned in the plays. The user-friendly formatting encourages full use of the text. Although it does not provide a list of characters or possible sources for each play, this is similar in coverage and price to The Penguin Shakespeare Dictionary (2000), edited by Sandra Clark, which has 1000 entries. Recommended for all public and academic libraries.

useless,
This review is from: Dictionary of Shakespeare (Hardcover)
This is not a dictionary by any stretch of the imagination. It is about 200 pages long and all it contains are little summaries of people who appear in the plays. It will also tell you what "act" or "scene" means, but never tackles the countless words that appear in Shakespeare which the modern reader doesn't have a clue about...at least I don't.
And Amazon is charging a $100 for this silliness.
