Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The third edition is revised from the second edition with almost one hundred new terms and expanded definitions of many of the other terms.

From the Author

"I have been greatly encouraged by the review and the personal testimonials the dictionary has received. Pastors and laymen alike have reported that they have found it a useful tool. I know of Christians of long standing and advanced knowledge who keep it by them continually, and I know of new converts who have made it a means of coming to grips with the great doctrines of the faith. For all this I give the Lord my heartfelt thanks, with the prayer that He will be pleased to make this new and enlarged edition even more useful."

--From the Preface to the Revised and Enlarged Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars A definitive theological work from the reformed perspective, April 6, 2005
This review is from: Dictionary of Theological Terms: A Ready Reference of Over 800 Theological and Doctrinal Terms (Hardcover)
Written from a fundamental, reformed viewpoint, Dr Alan Cairns provides a conservative, concise and accurate resource for the theology student in this well-written volume. There are not many definitive, fundamental, as well as faithful, theological dictionaries available these days; most are usually written to appeal to the general masses of professing, ecumenical "Christendom". Alan Cairns gives a reformed perspective of numerous theological terms, allowing the student to have quick assess to the gist of the subject matter. Useful for both laymen and college students, the definitions are reliably biblical. Dr Cairns does not provide a potpourri of definitions, leaving the student to grasp at straws. He expounds that old time fundamentalist truth in a clear, yet easily digestible format in all its theological intricacies. If the reader is looking for a dictionary that pussyfoots around compromising views, or a volume that condones anything or everything, this is not the right book.

2.0 out of 5 stars I was disapointed., February 22, 2006
This review is from: Dictionary of Theological Terms: A Ready Reference of Over 800 Theological and Doctrinal Terms (Hardcover)
I was looking for a straight up dictionary for the theological terms that eluded me. What I found was that the author frequently succumbs to the temptation to put his spin on the topics. It makes it hard to trust him on the terms that you know nothing about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anyone who has an interest in the teachings of the Bible will find this book most helpful, May 22, 2006
This review is from: Dictionary of Theological Terms: A Ready Reference of Over 800 Theological and Doctrinal Terms (Hardcover)
Alan Cairns' Dictionary of Theological Terms is the most useful ready reference that I have used. It is committed to the inspiration, infallibilty, and sole-sufficiency of Scripture. It is a mine of Biblically-grounded answers.
