The Best of the Jazz Crusaders is also great, albeit with a more traditional jazz feel.
John Palmer
This is some of the best jazz/r&b put together on one cd in many a year.

This is the best soul/funk cd I've heard in my life. All the musicians are brilliant and have all space to do his best.

Just found this album by accident recently and sorry I did't hear it sooner. Joe Sample gets away from smooth jazz and back to his Crusaders roots with a brassier horn section courtesy of Oscar Brashear and company. Too bad he didn't follow it up... but a welcome reminder of what once was. For a similar funk sound, check out new LA band Breakestra or the new Cold Blood CD "Transfusion".

Many people, myself included, like Joe Sample's output with the Jazz Crusaders and the Crusaders. A lot of this music could be described as soul jazz. Much of his other work seems to be more in the genre of smooth jazz. On this release, Sample seems to be returning to the soul jazz fold although it could be better described as funk. So much for definitions. The title of this release is apt, as much of the music on this CD is drenched in a soulful feeling.

Like some of the other reviewers, I can't say that all of the tracks hold up equally. Nevertheless, tracks such as Brother Can You Spare Your Car, Did You Feel That? and Viva de Funk are really moving and played exceptionally well by some fine musicians. You can't go wrong when Steve Gadd plays drums. As funk goes, this is superior music because the musicians make the difference. For those interested in this type of music, this CD is worth investigating.

This is one of those CDs where you have to be in the right frame of mind prior to popping it in the CD player. I enjoy some songs very much but want to skip over others. Definitely a niche CD.

This represents a fun outing for Joe Sample & Crusaders-based jazz. Sounds audiophile, and is a bit more upbeat than others in the catalog!

I first bought this when it was on cassette when I was in College. After graduating lost it and never could find it. Heard Joe Sample when came in town and just had to get it back so I bought the CD. You can't beat the funky soulful tunes such as the "Last Buzz" wow! This is a CD that you stick in and it will help you get through the 5 o'clock traffic. This is a great CD by a great jazz musician at a steal of a price!

My parents used to play this album when I was a little girl and I am now in my mid twenties having just heard this album over again today. It is striking how much music is tied to memory. I'm finding myself anticipating the next notes as i remember riffs and melodies. Soooo sweettt Joe Samples the man!!
