5.0 out of 5 stars Good fun for kids and adults (one on one and together)
Our family loves Diddy Kong racing! We come back to it over and over 'cause the adults love it as much as the kids. We race each other and it is loads of fun. The graphics are neat and you can pick from a variety of racers (Pipsy is almost like a family member now!) 3.0 out of 5 stars Is it better than Mario Kart?
The first question hovering over Diddy Kong Racing is: is it better than Mario Kart? Well yes and no. Mario Kart was virtually useless for any single player; Diddy Kong has a superb single player mode that will keep you busy for months. However, Diddy Kong is let down by a less successful multi-player mode. It's hard to pinpoint why this is so but all I know is that...

The graphics are neat and you can pick from a variety of racers (Pipsy is almost like a family member now!) Each racer has a particular skill(s) and/or a few weaknesses and it's fun to see who picks which racer. There are two ways to play..you can just do races or you can do the adventure (also a race). Recommend it for those nights when you want to relax with the kids and have a laugh out loud blast.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great one player action, May 15, 2000

My first thought with this game was that it would be a clonefrom 'Mario Cart' but after couple of weeks of playing it I realizedit was much more. I found challenging game with detailed race tracks in a beautiful 3D environment, with smooth racing gameplay that is second only to 'Mario Cart'. With excellent frame rates it doesn't look dodge like other N64 racing games. The only bad thing is if you are looking for two player action look else where because it doesn't offer much. Other than that it is a great game...a great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great racing/adventure game, September 8, 2000

"Diddy Kong Racing" is the only game of its kind. Unlike a lot of people might think, it's far from being a "Mario Kart 64" clone. It has all the great racing that you'll find in other racing games, but adds an adventure feel to it. Your goal is to get all the balloons and amulets in the game. You get balloons by winning races, but that's only the beginning. Once you win all the races in one of the worlds, you have to go race a huge boss. Once you outrace the boss, you then have to do the Silver Coin Challenge (find the silver coins in all the races and win the race). Then you must race the boss over again, but this time it will be twice as hard. Finally, after you do that, you've beaten that world, but you must get the gold in the Trophy Race.

There are a few worlds in "Diddy Kong Racing," and they're all huge. You will race in three different vehicles, a go cart, hovercraft, and an airplane. You also have weapons that you can use during all the races. There are different colored balloons, which will give you weapons such as missiles, oil slicks, magnets, and shields. In all of them, you can get powerups by getting more than one of the same colored balloon, in a row. For example, get a red balloon and you'll get a missile, but if you get another red balloon before you shoot that missile, you will get a powerup in the form of a homing missile that will chase your opponents down.

"Diddy Kong Racing" also has great replay value. There are two battle stages and two other cool bonus stages that you can find and play anytime, up to four players. As you find the racing and bonus stages, they will become available where you can play them anytime in multiplayer. There is also a Time Trial mode and there are two hidden characters that you can find. Pretty much, this game is overloaded in replay value and you'll never get tired of playing the multiplayer games. It's also fun to beat the game over and over. "Diddy Kong Racing" is not only a great racing game, it's a fun adventure. I recommend "Diddy Kong Racing" to anyone who has a Nintendo 64.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cross-Genre Racing Adventure? Oh yeah., November 28, 1999

DKR (Diddy Kong Racing) is the only game I am aware of that is an adventure as well as a great racing game. The line drawn between racing and an adventure plot is just where it should be. When you first see the cutesy characters and tracks, you'll think it's easy. IT'S NOT. Sure, Adventure 1 may only take you 'bout a month (if you play constantly), but when you get to Adventure 2, it's a lot tougher. Then try Tracks Mode with the code "TIMETOLOSE". Then get T.T.. How about the Multiplayer games? And what about doing all this with Krunch? You'll see what I mean. Plus, in Adventure, you get to explore the outerworld, where you can access the races. Throw in DKR's plot and the Gold & Silver Balloons? There's gameplay. Maybe the toughest part is the Silver Coin Challenge in Adventure 2. If you thought the game was going easy on you, do this with Krunch, then use him to get T.T.. But when you get T.T., DON'T use him in Adventure. If you do all that, then I think you should have your hands full for AT LEAST four months (more if you play Multiplayer).

5.0 out of 5 stars cutesy, but a lot of fun, April 10, 2000

= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars

I am a HUGE fan of the MarioKart games and this one surpasses MarioKart 64 bigtime. Sure, it might be cutesy and some of the character's voices will get on your nerves, but the fun factor and replay value is out of this world! It is a lot better than MarioKart 64 in almost every way. The graphics are superb, the one player game is AWESOME and even after you beat the game, it's fun to go through it again. There are also 2 extra hidden characters to get to keep you racing. And most of all, the battle mode is different, but it is also great. In 2 of them, you compete against the computers or your friends to get so many eggs or bananas back to your base before they do. And best of all, in the other 2 it's just good old fashioned BATTLE! The 2 battle areas are a water level and an ice level, and they are fun.

If you ask me, I'd recommend getting Diddy Kong Racing before you get Mariokart 64 because it has more replay value than Mariokart ever thought of having.

I give this only 4 stars because I think there are some things missing like secret levels and I like certain characters to have special abilities to help them through the obstacles. But I really loved this game even my Dad loves it and he's really old.

5.0 out of 5 stars If it's a kiddy game, it's a very hard one, July 7, 2006

Diddy Kong Racing will forever be looked at as a kiddy title, and in some ways Rareware did go overboard on this one. The character designs are very sugary sweet, accompanied by high-pitched voices that you want to slap in the face (Pipsy, I'm looking at you). Bright, cheerful colors, bright cheerful soundtrack. Yeah, kids love this stuff.

But strip all that away, and this is a very well-designed and challenging cart racer. It kind of does the opposite of Mario Kart 64, and offers a strong single-player mode and a fun but somewhat bare multiplayer-mode. Similiar to platform games, you race through courses and collect balloons, which in turn open boss fights and other worlds with more courses. There are three fully-tuned vehicles to choose from: your kart, a plane, and a hovercraft. Each has it's pros and cons, controls differently from the others, and takes skill to master. You can even race different vehicles against each other, often taking different routes in the same course. Like other kart racers this one isn't about speed, but the tracks have lots of detail and animation, and are consistently interesting to race through (one even looks like the Death Star trench from Star Wars).

Where the game starts to frustrate is Rareware's typical way of extending play time. Beat the courses once, then race through them again and collect 8 hard-to-reach coins while still maintaing first place. This leads to a harder boss encounter, and must be done to unlock the final levels and the best ending. Little kids will probably throw the controller down right here, but anyone who's worth anything in video games will find it immensely satisfying to clear Rare's requirements and unlock all that the game has to offer. Seperates the men from the boys, and all that.

If Rareware hadn't made the characters so sugary, this could've easily topped Mario Kart 64 in recognition among the older crowd. Definitely worth a purchase used, and good luck to all those up for the challenge.

3.0 out of 5 stars Is it better than Mario Kart?, January 4, 2001
This review is from: Diddy Kong Racing (Video Game)
The first question hovering over Diddy Kong Racing is: is it better than Mario Kart? Well yes and no. Mario Kart was virtually useless for any single player; Diddy Kong has a superb single player mode that will keep you busy for months. However, Diddy Kong is let down by a less successful multi-player mode. It's hard to pinpoint why this is so but all I know is that if I have a few friends around for a game, it is Mario that fits into the console.

Perhaps it is because Mario had more original power-ups. In Diddy Kong, you get different strength speed ups or different strength fire-meters. It is below-par when compared to Mario's lightning, star-boost, turbos, etc. power-ups.

The strength of Diddy-Kong is with its triumphant single-player. Sure, the arguments about its repetitiveness are correct but the courses that you have to repeat are spectacular. You fly, hover, or drive through the courses but the pinnacle of the game comes when you have to face the bosses. They're not easy, but they're not overly difficult. In fact, the game-makers hit got the difficult setting just right.

To be fair, I got sick of the game after I thought I finished only to find myself up in space. I can only take so many anti-climaxes before my interest collapses. Otherwise, though the game did keep me occupied and I was glad that I purchased it. Another winner for Nintendo.

All I can say about this game is that is much much much better than Mario Kart. Not only it is difficult, but fun to play with. You can't believe how boring is Mario Kart. It is nothing, I didn't know what am I playing for. Diddy Kong Racing is the best racing game I ever bought. I love the phrase:"go for it!"
