PreS-K-With the Manhattan skyline in the background, and a bustling multicultural crowd, readers are taken on a whirlwind romp with rambunctious Didi. In typical New York fashion, the preschooler is in a hurry, and responds to her father's edict, "go slow," with a resounding "No!" The child and her dad swap observations. Didi spots a little yellow puppy, while her father zeros in on the big black dog. They encounter animals, musicians, and friends, before ending up at the playground, imitating sounds they hear along the way. As a spring shower bursts upon their play, the two dash for home, as Didi calls out, "Daddy, go slow!" and Daddy responds "No!" The rhythmic text flows smoothly, and the double-page, bright, pastel illustrations depict the light mood of the story. Use this book in conjunction with Amy Schwartz's A Teeny, Tiny Baby (Orchard, 1994) for a rousing New York (Brooklyn-style) storytime.-DeAnn Tabuchi, San Anselmo Public Library, CA

A Winner for Dads AND Didis!,

This review is from: Didi and Daddy on the Promenade (Hardcover)
Mary-Louise Gay's illustrations are a perfect complement to Marilyn Singer's text in this book that captures a father/daughter excursion along the Esplanade in Brooklyn, New York to a T. What will Didi see today? What will she hear today? Who will she greet today? They dance, they jump, they swish and slide...do everything but go slow...because Didi can't! She is a toddler after all! This is an excellent book for reading out loud or sharing one on one...it will inspire you and your Didi to take a promenade of your own no matter where you live!

This review is from: Didi and Daddy on the Promenade (Hardcover)
My daughter loves to have this book read to her. When Didi says "No" and races ahead of her daddy, my daughter shouts along. Great rhythm to the text, and the illustrations are gratifying to adults as well as children. Lots of familiar things to point out, including, tragically, the north and south towers of the WTC.
