A DELICIOUS DIDO - AN OUTSTANDING ODE.

'Dido & Aeneas', that tried and true and much-recorded semi-opera of the great Henry Purcell!!! BUT John Eliot Gardiner had to be one of the first of many to record this. The very excellent Christopher Hogwood recording came next in 1992 followed by the Emmanuelle Haim in 2003. Gardiner's 1990 disc preempts them, but it's not necessarily any better. As far as I'm concerned all 3 aforementioned are quite good. Depends upon what you are seeking from this music. If you want a 'razzle-dazzle' presentation with the very outstanding Monteverdi Choir and excellent soloists, this one is for you. On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with the Hogwood rendition which I think I
actually prefer, because I personally like the more moderate tempos and the overall 'eveness' of the production. It's a fine point, though!!!

But the real bonus for buying the Gardiner version is the performance of 'Ode for St. Cecila's Day'. Michael Chance's performance is simply 'stunning', magnificant, marvelous, mesmorizing, and he sings for most of the ode. In fact, the sololists throughout the entire disc are first-rate. Jonathan Peter Kenny (countertenor) outdid himself as the 'spirit' in Dido. I have never heard him sound this good!!!

Needless to say, the English Baroque Soloists provided a substantial accompaniment under the expert direction of John Eliot Gardiner.

I don't know how I got started in the opera stuff, all I know is that Purcell's Dido and Aeneas was one of my first operas. Nowadays, with a lot more of knowledge, I still recall this opera as one of the best I have ever heard.
This version, from my humble point of view, is one of the best you can get. I love Gardiner's versions and, particulary, this one.
If you'd like to enter the world of Purcell, that's the best entrance...
