tense contemporary gothic thriller,
This review is from: Die Before I Wake (Mass Market Paperback)
Julie Hanrahan goes on a cruise as a means of relaxing. On board she meets and falls in love with widower Dr. Thomas Larkin, father of two young children. He feels the same way and after a five day whirlwind courtship they marry.
Julie leaves California to live with her spouse in Maine where she struggles to adjust to the environs. However, the biggest shock is to learn that Tom's first wife Beth committed suicide and her two kids still grieve big time as they do not understand why their mommy died. Tom's mother, who lives with the, is outright nasty to Julie, who wonders if she should go home. As she considers fleeing to the West Coast, Beth's sister believes her sister was murdered probably by Tom, who displays a temper that he hid when they were in the Caribbean. Julie ponders whether her husband is a killer as accidents begin to befall on her. Though the theme has been used before (for instance the classic Grant-Bergman movie Notorious) DIE BEFORE I WAKE is a tense contemporary gothic thriller with excellent spins. Laurie Breton keeps the reader off kilter guessing whether Tom is a dangerous menace ready to kill his second wife or a brooding hero unsure what to do to keep his beloved safe. The story line is fast-paced but it is Julie's account of the goings-on that makes the tale exciting and frightening as the audience knows the bumps in the night are real; at least in her mind. Ms. Breton provides a one sitting taut tale that keeps fans off balance with doubts between straight deadly suspense and romantic suspense. Harriet Klausner

Excellent romantic suspense,

This review is from: Die Before I Wake (Mass Market Paperback)
From the moment I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. With its deftly hidden clues, clever red herrings, and well-developed cast of characters, Die Before I Wake is one of the best romantic suspense novels I've read in a long time. I recommend it highly to all suspense lovers.

Something a little different...,
This review is from: Die Before I Wake (Mass Market Paperback)
Although there was less romance in this book than in the books I usually read, I really enjoyed this story. The characters were at different times intense and humorous and the mystery kept me interested. It is written in the first person, another difference from the usual. Overall, I recommend this book and look forward to the author's next effort.

Romantic suspense......NOT!,

How disappointing! This is your average "is it suicide or murder?" plot. The second wife snoops around and decides that the first Mrs. did not commit suicide, and takes it upon herself the find the killer. I have read all of L. Breton's books and found them enjoyable....not this one. If you are looking for romantic scenes and personal relationships dialogue, it's not. This book is so far different from her others (Black Widow was one of the best) that I had to look at the back cover pix to be sure it was the same author.Die Before I Wake

Overdone plot,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Die Before I Wake (Mass Market Paperback)
First, I usually enjoy this author's books and was dissapointed in this story. Second, I do not like books written in the first person, they tend to have very little dialogue and read like a diary.
This book was made up on an overdone plot of the curious AKA nosy--herione who pokes her nose where it doesn't belong, add in the stereotypical suspecious characters for red herrings and whole latta leaps of faith and there you have this book or a PG-13 rated scooby doo episode. I truly thought that at the end the killer was going to say: "and I was going to get away with it too, if it wasnt for those pesky kids..." The author attempted to convey a sense of hyper-suspicion but at times it was like one of those stupid Verizon commercials where they warn the customers of a "dead zone.." and all they have to do is say but we have verizon and the threatening atmosphere is wiped away.... Dislikes about the book: It was extremely repetitive, we get it already-- the lead character is suspicious of everyone around her, that theme became a bit tiredsome. The lead character was annoying, while I understand her suspicions, I could not understand why her husband loved her so much. She undermined him with his children and questioned his innocence to other people. Very little romance or chemistry between the two leads. ***spoiler alert*** The killer's motive made no sense, it was inconsistent with the facts presented in the book. |
