Grade 5 Up. Part of a series of novelizations of The X-Files TV shows, Die, Bug, Die! is the less cryptic?and more visceral?renaming of the original hour-long episode, "The War of the Coprophages," first aired about a year ago. The specific poop-eaters in question are everybody's favorite: cockroaches. Fox Mulder, a parapsychology proponent, and Dana Scully, a medical doctor and the rational, scientific half of this special FBI investigative team, are checking out the roach hysteria in Miller's Grove, Massachusetts, a university town with some weird, but apparently unrelated, research going on: Dr. Eckerle is a chemist working on alternative fuels; Dr. Bambi Berenbaum is an entomologist who just loves roaches; and Dr. Ivanov creates mechanical bugs with artificial intelligence. Add a few dead bodies, all discovered with roaches crawling all over them, of course, and you've got a delightful mystery with a creepy and scatological edge. Scully's skeptical sarcasm lends a humorous touch and the banter between Mulder and Scully is sassy. This hi/lo chapter book will obviously appeal to fans of the maddeningly conspiratorial TV series but even non-X-Filers can appreciate the scientific "solution" despite leaving open the option of a buggy E.T.?John Sigwald, Unger Memorial Library, Plainview, TX
