About what you'd expect.,

This review is from: Die Fledermaus: Vocal Score (G. Schirmer Opera Score Editions) (Paperback)
This score only has the English translation, but not the original German. It's about what you'd expect from Ruth and Thomas Martin: the translation is pretty cheesy at times. This is one of my favorite operas. It can be very funny if done well.

This review is from: Die Fledermaus: Vocal Score (G. Schirmer Opera Score Editions) (Paperback)
Comparing this score to other scores using the Ruth and Thomas Martin translation shows that the G. Schirmer score has a lot of word changes. This is frustrating when performing with a large group because everyone has different editions and causes need for a lot of correction. Also, I was disappointed that this particular Schirmer score doesn't include the original language. Other scores I've gotten have the foreign language in addition to the English translation, but this only has the English. I'm not sure why this is, but I had to buy a second score so I could learn the arias in German.

This is a standard and affordable edition. The English translation is pretty awful, but commonly used for U.S. performances. I would much prefer it if it were a bilingual edition.

This is a good book version if you're planning to do Fledermaus in English; includes no dialogue as in the original edition.

Functional, but not that Funny,

This review is from: Die Fledermaus: Vocal Score (G. Schirmer Opera Score Editions) (Paperback)
This is a functional and cheap vocal score from which to learn or perform Die Fledermaus. However, as with many Schirmer scores, the translation leaves something to be desired. It strays rather far from the original text, but the substituted text just isn't as funny as it is meant to be in the original. I was told to purchase this version for our upcoming undergrad production, but I think I'll be borrowing a better translation from my voice teacher to see if the text is any better.

This book was in great condition, brand new, reasonably priced, and arrived exactly when they said it would. The music has been so fun to learn and having this version in English has been very helpful.
