Let me say up front, I am a die hard Cynthia Eden fan. Be it her paranormals, her romantic suspense, her serial titles, I think I have read everything the woman has written, and I have loved all of it. When this came up on Vine for review, well, it was a no brainer choice for me!

Katherine Cole is living in New Orleans after escaping the publicity following her discovery of her (ex)fiance killing his latest victim. How creepy is that? The ex-fiance is on the run, and Katherine is in hiding. When an all too similar murder occurs in New Orleans, Katherine is done running. She is done with being a victim. Katherine seeks out the detective on the New Orleans murder, wanting to help the police finally capture Valentine, as she now refers to him, once and for all.

Dane Black is the homicide detective in charge of the gruesome murder. He isn't quite sure what to make of Katherine and her seemingly inside knowledge of the murder he is investigating.

What worked for me - Katherine - A strong heroine, she pushes past her fear, determined to stop Valentine and reclaim her life. She is exquisitely written. We see her inner turmoil, her resolve to not hide any longer. She has fire and a temper, even after all she has been through.

Dane - a good, solid cop who is cautious and believable. Even though he is attracted to Katherine, he proceeds with caution to eliminate her as a suspect. None of the "well, I want her so she must not be linked to the killer" sort of justification. He is solid and real, and his attraction to Katherine is heartfelt.

Michael or "Valentine" - Okay, yes, this may be a little weird, but I almost, for a minute, felt a bit sorry for Michael. Yes, he is a remorseless killer who would never stop on his own, but he was very well drawn.

Super easy to read, it only took me a day and I really enjoyed the story line. I was in the mood for a fast paced book about pretty likable characters, for the most part anyway. Katherine is in witness protection after being the person who found her fiance butchering young women in the basement of their home. Several years later she is now in New Orleans and making a new life for herself when the signature murders start around her. She goes to the police and the rest of the story is yours to find.

I really liked this novel and will be looking for more from this author.

Cynthia Eden has written an emotional and intense romantic suspense novel in DIE FOR ME. Katherine Cole can't ignore it when her ex-fiance--the Valentine Killer--surfaces in New Orleans. She has been relocated there by the US Marshals who now want to her relocate again. Katherine--never call her Kat--is sick of running and tired of the guilt she feels each time she hears about another victim.

She goes to the cops. Detective Dane Black is in charge of the latest case. Dane goes from thinking she might be a suspect herself or an accomplice to deciding that she is an innocent victim that he needs to protect with his life. The emotions are intense. But Katherine is no victim. She has strength and courage and is determined to stop the Valentine Killer before he kills again.

The Valentine Killer is obsessed with Katherine because she didn't let the abuse she suffered as a child damage her as he was damaged. He needs her because she makes him a better person but he needs to kill more. The story has lots of twists and turns. There are a series of grisly deaths that all connect with Katherine in some way. Eden kept me totally in the dark about who the Valentine Killer was.

Fans of romantic suspense novels will like both the mystery and the romance in this one. As for myself, I never want to get a bouquet of red roses...

Format: Paperback
Katelynn Crenshaw comes home early from work and finds her boyfriend and soon to be husband busily mutilating the body of a woman in their basement. Now having doubts about the upcoming wedding, she calls the police but her now ex-boyfriend, one Michael O'Rourke, escapes. It turns out this isn't the first time O'Rourke, now dubbed the Valentine Killer on account of him leaving red roses at the scene, has committed this particular crime. Thinking Crenshaw to be the next target, the police give her a new identity and she moves to New Orleans. Three years later however, her ex has found out her whereabouts and has started killing again.

The usual format in serial killer books then, but this is in the Montlake romance series, something of which I was unaware until it turned up. (Yes, I know I should have read the product details.) Not usually something I would read (Montlake that is), this did turn out to be no better than I imagined. Once I dismissed the romantic interludes between the now Katherine Cole and detective Dane Black, what was underneath was a run-of-the-mill crime/thriller involving a psycho continually referred to as Valentine, even though the FBI and local police know his name and what he looks like. Equally annoying is Eden's recurring use of a phrase, "A muscle jerked in his jaw". Along with repeating the expression, "I don't want any one else to die" ad nauseam, and plenty of single word sentences, it makes me wonder whether she had a word count to fulfil.

But what really grates is the portrayal of the New Orleans cops who come across as completely incompetent. Two are sent to keep an eye on Katherine, who enters her art studio on the main road. The lights don't go on so both uniforms go round the back of the building to see what's wrong. Sorry, but no.
