A Beautiful Reading, August 15, 2001

I particularly appreciated the clarity of Mehmet Okonsar's recording of J. S. Bach's The Art of the Fugue. The rich voices of baroque organ and harpsichord beautifully complement Bach's demonstration of fugal writing. Mr. Okonsar performs the difficult and abstruse with apparent masterful ease. He has produced a recording of emotional beauty.
The CD is unusual in that it also carries a wealth of information for the serious student of J. S. Bach. In addition to the audio recordings, a CD-ROM data section, which I accessed on my computer, provides informative articles such as one by Dr. Timothy A. Smith, an "Introduction to the Art of Fugue." MIDI files of all recorded pieces are included. I enjoyed playing the pieces on a synthesizer and experimenting with the instrumentation of the work.
