Witty, original and extremely engaging music!,
This review is from: Die Reklamation (Audio CD)
This is some of the best music I have heard in a long time. I'm not a big fan of rock and other popular music, mostly because I often don't agree with the lyrics-- they just don't speak to me! But Wir Sind Helden has amazing lyrics; they're not about love and sappy stuff, but about important things. And yet, they manage to sing about important stuff in a deliciously comic way! Just some examples (translated):
"See, the moon built herself a telescope with which she looks into our room at night-- who would have thought that the moon would do such a thing?" -Die nacht. "Must I always have to do what I can? One hand holds the world and the other offers drinks. I can put my ten feet in twenty doors and perform ballet with the eleventh in my nose." -Müssen Nur Wollen. I invariably find myself singing along to this uplifting, whimsical music. The lead singer has a great voice and the tunes are creative, catchy and never repetitive. Of course, it's difficult to appreciate this album if you don't understand german-- but if you do, and you haven't heard Wir Sind Helden yet, you're definitely missing out!

Warning: NOT actually Die Reklamation,

This is great music, but take note--Wir Sind Helden has two albums out, Von Hier An Blind and Die Reklamation. This is a compilation of those two albums with some songs from each. Not a bad idea, but annoying of Amazon not to show the song list which would make this clear. If you want Die Reklamation, buy one with the framed photo on the cover. If, however, you want a Wir Sind Helden sampler, I guess this compilation is a good thing--Wir Sind Helden makes infectious, enjoyable, get-up-and-dance pop-rock.

Terrific band terrific album,

This is definitely one of the most original bands I've heard - German or otherwise. Their sound takes many influences from jazz to indie to blues and it works very well. The lyrics are intelligent and witty and Holofernes (strange stage name ... think Assyrian general) has a great voice. It's one of those few albums that gets better after every hearing. In short, one of my best music purchases this year.

It seems a day does not go by when I do not "discover" another "Wir Sind Helden" song - one that I simply hadn't noticed before. Today that song was "Denkmal" - look for videos online. If this band ever breaks into the English language market it will do for the German language what hundreds of Goethe Institutes and thousands of High School German teachers have failed to do for decades: finally there is a reason everyone will want to learn German.
Wir Sind Helden's music is a little hard to characterize, but I think anyone who likes Crowded House, or the Beatles, will appreciate their melodies and especially their lyrics if you know enough German to learn them. A wonderful band and a great album.

Red vs. Green: A Comparison,
By Kevy_Metal (Pacific Northwest, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Die Reklamation (Audio CD)
The "red" album cover issue of Die Reklamation - as opposed to the "green" issue - includes a bonus DVD which contains 2 documentaries: "Die Zeit Heilt Alle Wunder" and "Wir Sind's Helden: Aufgemotzte Version", as well as 4 videos: "Muessen Nur Wollen", "Aurelie", "Guten Tag" and "Denkmal". The videos also have optional commentary by the band (auf Deutsch natuerlich), pretty cool.
This album is an excellent composition of pop-rock, lavished with 80's-esque synthesizer, that rivals anything produced by their English singing contemporaries. Wir Sind Helden craft smartly written songs you can rock out or dance to. If you don't understand German you might miss the poignancy of the lyrics, but can still appreciate the groove and melody of the music.

I saw this band a few months ago live on Swiss German TV and I found them really refreshing. German rock has something really special and this band is no exception. The singer has a great voice and the band plays with energy.

Dass ist Das Schesse!,

This album is pritty sweet. I've been listening to alot of German rock lately, and its a nice change from the [..] they play around here in America. This album is really really orginal, they're songs vary alot, but still stay in the general rock/indie specturm. I have to say, if i were to compare it to any American band it'd have to be Motion City Soundtrack. If you've heard "I Am The Movie" by them this album is alot like that, but in German. Also i just like it alot more, the tunes are really catchy, songs like 'Ist Das So?', 'Rüssel an Schwanz', and 'Denkmal' are really good in my opnion.
Basicly if your looking for something orgional, or just something down right different, defenatly check this album out. Even if your not, still check it out, its just that good.

Not bad for German music...,

Saw this band live in Wurzburg, Germany. One of the few German bands I actually like. They have a pretty intelligent pop sound that makes for a pretty good listen. A little too expensive to import, though. Still looking for a download somewhere...

Cool tunes and poetic lyrics, if you likes the "elektrorock" style. To be recommended only to those who understand German. Amazing, that one can buy this CD even in a land as far away as America. A bit too expensive, indeed.
