5.0 out of 5 stars Die softly is one of a kind!!
Now I read this book a year ago, and I can still remember the storyline. It is indeed one of a kind !But don't let the cover put you off. It was only because of the blurb that I decided to read it. It's based about a young lad called Herby, who's not popular, but he's got a talent, he can capture people's real beauty on camera. Sadly the fool decides to take pictures of...

2.0 out of 5 stars Eighty Percent Exposition
It began with a surreal western dream full of symbolism and death. Then reality, in the form of a small nothing-happening rural town, came crashing back. The main character, Herb, is a high school geeky male photographer with no self-confidence and a bad memory. The overwhelming majority of the novel is him talking with other characters; the serves to advance and...

Sadly the fool decides to take pictures of the cheerleaders in the schools showers.BUT INSTEAD he gets something else. I'll leave it at that. I think that it's a touching story, the ending broke my heart! But it came down to reality and sometimes things don't always turn out the way you want it to. Great book if your looking for horror.I believe they should turn this book into a movie,it's great.

5.0 out of 5 stars "He took a picture of death....", March 25, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Die Softly (Mass Market Paperback)
"Die Softly" takes place in Mannville, California, a small town virtually empty of crime. The book alternates between the present and past events leading up to several teen murders. In an investigative phone call between Sergeant Fitzsimmons and Herb Trasker (the 18-year-old male protagonist), Herb explains how he became involved in the murder of a popular cheerleader and various other high school students.

Friday:
It began as an immature plan to "get even" with the cheerleader squad by photographing them while they showered in the locker rooms after practice. Shortly after the scheduled photo shoot, the head cheerleader (Lisa Barnscull) dies in a fiery auto crash at the bottom of a cliff. Herb doesn't think much of the connection between these two events until he's developing the film--and he recognizes two people in the background (one being Sammie Smith, one of his closest friends, hiding in the shadows; the other is Alexa Close, the sweet cheerleader Herb has a crush on, who is creeping up on Lisa with a baseball bat). After this discovery, the next 24 hours are a complete blur for Herb. He trails one suspect after another during a nonstop sleepless night, knowing that if he isn't too careful with the information he has, he could be the next murder victim.

When I began "Die Softly", I wasn't really into it, mainly because the dream in the prologue seemed pointless and a bit too long. But once Herb began describing the events of what happened to Sergeant Fitzsimmons, the book quickly became more interesting. One bit of advice, though: no matter how tempting it is, do not read the last page/sentence of this book ahead of time. I did and it completely ruined the suspense for me. Other than that, if you're into teen horror/suspense, then this is a good book to try. It's really fast-paced and twisted (particularly the ending), everything typical of a good Pike book.

The thing that made this book so good was that it was very realistic and the ending was so cool. It was really hard to put this book down because I had to find out what would happen to Herb next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, December 10, 2003

This review is from: Die Softly (Mass Market Paperback)
Well I personally loved DIE SOFTLY. It is about a boy named Herb who is the school photographer after his BFF, Sammie, is kicked because the pictures she took stunk. She gives him the idea of rigging a camera in the girls' locker room showers to catch so nude pictures of the cheerleaders' and hand them out to everyone. Herb takes it and get the pictures. When he gets the roll and developes it, the cheerleader in them is murdered in one of the pictures. It looks as if the love of his life, Alexa, has killed Lisa, her best friend. I appears as if earlier Lisa is killed in a car crash, but only Alexa knows the truth. She claims to Herb that she is innocent and didn't kill her best friend while she tries to seduce Herb. What really happened??? Read to find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, March 17, 2006

I casually picked up this book for some light reading to pass some time. I finished it overnight...it had me gripped. Pike is a welcomed digression in my reading choices, but I have to admit, it was a good one. The story line doesn't unfold until the end, and no amount of guessing gave it away. It is an intense novel. Not for the overly young. The death in the end was a shock.... makes the book even more memorable.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Die Softly (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was such an exciting story. When I first read the first line i wanted to read more!!!!!!!!! It is about a guy named Herb who wanted to take nude pictures of the cheerleaders and he does take the pictures. The next day he finds out that his friend Lisa had been mudered. In the picture it shows a hint of who might of murdered Lisa. Also, a while back Lisa's Friend Roger also was murdered and later in the story there are more people who had ben murdered, but in that one picture it gives you a hint of who might of murdered all those people. I don't want to ruin the ending so if you want to find out more read this book and you wont regret it!!!!!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy topic's, July 18, 2001
This review is from: Die Softly (Mass Market Paperback)
I remember this book from when I was young. Then end was writen in such a silly way added to how creept out I was. Not only was it very guesome but it played on a theme that is very adult in nature. This is why I recall this Christopher Pike novel in particular. The characters are so young and innocent and played this way in the book as they are, its only too easy for children to be shocked by the scope of the ending. Like a child watching Kids or Train spotting to view the realities of life, it was after a lot of reflection that this book made me think even harder about teenage decisions and their after affects. The main character is strong and becomes heroic in nature. Not only is this book entertaining, a great read, but also thought provoking. Four Stars.
