First published in 1950, this board book (which refers to the very thick cardboard cover)by Cilly Schmitt-Teichmann is a classic children's book for girls. The main character, a young girl called Liese,has a knack for getting into trouble. This is not a malicious, mischievous girl, but rather one who lives in her own world, oblivious of life around her. One example of her escapades is of her walking the streets reading a book - clearly not alert to the cars and people along the way.
It is a brief book, written in German, but one of small morals for teaching young girls the ways of life, or purely for entertainment. The most enchanting aspect of the book is its illustrations. Illustrator, Charly Greifoner, uses vivid colours and delightful detail in every picture. It is in many respects more of a picture book than a story book for the detail is in the picture. Even without a knowledge of the German language, the morals of each tale are easily and clearly understood. My mother is German and I grew up with this book. When it fell apart in my older years, I bought another. It's one of those "hand me down" books that you give to your own children and grandchildren and great grandchildren.
