Editorial Reviews

Review

The death of Jesus for our sins is the heart of the Christian faith. What does a physician have to say about that death? That s the subject of this important new book, examining the medical evidence from the Biblical texts. Particularly intriguing are the details of the death of Jesus as found in the Old Testament, written hundreds of years before the actual event. Jerry Newcombe, D.Min. TV Producer, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida Co-author of numerous books with D. James Kennedy, Ph.D., including Christ s Passion: The Power and the Promise --Nordskog Publishing's website (NordPub.com)

It takes a physician to pronounce a man dead. It takes a student to research how and why a man dies. Mark is both! As a physician of medicine and a student of the Bible, Mark has not only discovered that a man died, he has also learned why He died. The man Jesus! The reason we need a Savior! David K. Smith, d.d. Christian & Missionary Alliance Board Senior Pastor, Fairhaven Church, Dayton, Ohio --Nordskog Publishing's website (NordPub.com)

In this complete treatment of the crucifixion and the suffering associated with this kind of punishment, Dr. Marinella reminds us of man s inhumanity to man and God s great love for us to accept this form of death to provide such a great salvation. Jonathan M. Saxe, M.D., F.A.C.S. Professor of Surgery Director of Trauma Research, Wright State University Candidate Master of Arts in Religious Studies, Liberty University, Lynchburg, Virginia --Nordskog Publishing's website (NordPub.com)

In "Died He for Me", Dr. Marinella presents readers with a brutally graphic but informative medical description of Christ's crucifixion. I have read a fair amount of material relating to the crucifixion and yet I still found this short volume informative. Especially interesting was the author's descriptions on the types of bacteria that might have time to complecate Christ's medical condition. Overall, the book admits a fair amount is conjecture since the Gospels don't go into a lot of detail about Jesus's specific injuries. However for the most part I think the medical opinions seem quite plausible (though I'm admittedly not a doctor) and very graphic (this book may not be the best for someone easily bothered by written descriptions of medical injuries). There are a few facts in the book that I find the accuracy questionable. For example the author states women and Roman senators were exempt from scourging prior to execution. I know Roman citizens usually weren't scourged or crucified but I have read of some Christian women martyrs who were scourged (it should be noted that Roman citizens were crucified themselves on occasion for a number of offenses). Another question regards the placement of the nails which the author feels went through the wrists. Many scholars would agree with him if ropes weren't also used but Zugibe showed the hands were still possible with some variation. Once again this gets into murky territory as the term for hand in the Gospels can also specify the wrist area. The book also features some devotional material and gives Biblical prophecies for the crucifixion.

On the whole a very interesting and informative work that graphically provides a glimpse of Jesus's sacrifice and sufferings. I recommend it but caution readers who may be bothered by the graphic medical details.

This is a shockingly graphic and informative book about the physical sufferings of Jesus Christ. I think the author did a great job as a physician of explaining for the understanding of the reader the extensive injuries of Christ. I have not ever read anything like it before. I will be using it later in school as a part of science and bible. I think that it is useful for a better understanding of the physical price of our redemption - most of us would scarce go a day without food for another, much less endure what Christ did.

Thank you Nordskog publishing for this review copy.

The book talks about the medical details of the crucifixion that you wouldn't think of. It gives you a greater appreciation of the sacrafice made by Jesus and why we should focus on that as much as we do the resurrection.
