Houston's gift to Punk fans..Thanx!, December 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Died for Your Sins (Audio CD)
The Avengers opened up for the Sex Pistols farewell bomb at San Francisco's Winterland, and The Avengers blew them away!
What made The Avengers a unique band was frontwoman Penelope Houston's soaring vocals and insightful lyrics. Her convictions don't get lost by being pretentious. She confronts the concepts of martyrdom, race identity, rebellion, and society's automatism. The music was a twangy delight, which strayed from Punk's typical time signatures.
This CD is a gift to Punk fans from Houston, who dedicated herself to buying live takes of her own band's songs from bootleggers in order to compile this CD! The sound is often very muddy, but each instrument can be distinguished. You're not going to be able to track down anything else from The Avengers because all their releases are sadly out of print(paying collector scum prices is a crime!), but this CD contains all the tracks that earned The Avengers the respect they deserved.
Another incentive to plunk down your money for this album is that Houston teams up with a new rhythm section to dish out three new songs(the band was dubbed The Scavengers)! highly recommended. Don't let The Avengers be forgotten!

Penelope can rock my socks anytime she wants, September 28, 2004
This review is from: Died for Your Sins (Audio CD)
I hate having to give this album 3 stars but i want people to know what they are getting. The first 7 songs on this album will measure up to the seven songs on almost any album because they are freaking priceless, the rest of the album is good too but the sound quality is awful, more awful than any other punk album i ever heard. If the sound quality was better i would probably give it a five. Best songs: "Teenage rebel","(...)"friends of mine" and "end of the world".

San Francisco's Finest 70's Punk, July 12, 1999
By A Customer
I had a crappy cassette tape of the orignal Avenger's EP that I taped back in the early eighties. So I'm glad to see this CD collection of San Francisco's finest 70's punk. For those who don't know: The Avengers opened for the Sex Pistols last show at Winterland in SF. Then slowly disappeared. Penelope Houston, the fabulous singer/songwriter has put out a few Cds in the nineties, Very unpunk but still great songwriting. Her voice can still be just as intense although more grownup, like most of us old punks.
