Houston's gift to Punk fans..Thanx!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Died for Your Sins (Audio CD)
The Avengers opened up for the Sex Pistols farewell bomb at San Francisco's Winterland, and The Avengers blew them away! What made The Avengers a unique band was frontwoman Penelope Houston's soaring vocals and insightful lyrics. Her convictions don't get lost by being pretentious. She confronts the concepts of martyrdom, race identity, rebellion, and society's automatism. The music was a twangy delight, which strayed from Punk's typical time signatures. This CD is a gift to Punk fans from Houston, who dedicated herself to buying live takes of her own band's songs from bootleggers in order to compile this CD! The sound is often very muddy, but each instrument can be distinguished. You're not going to be able to track down anything else from The Avengers because all their releases are sadly out of print(paying collector scum prices is a crime!), but this CD contains all the tracks that earned The Avengers the respect they deserved. Another incentive to plunk down your money for this album is that Houston teams up with a new rhythm section to dish out three new songs(the band was dubbed The Scavengers)! highly recommended. Don't let The Avengers be forgotten!

I hate having to give this album 3 stars but i want people to know what they are getting. The first 7 songs on this album will measure up to the seven songs on almost any album because they are freaking priceless, the rest of the album is good too but the sound quality is awful, more awful than any other punk album i ever heard. If the sound quality was better i would probably give it a five. Best songs: "Teenage rebel","(...)"friends of mine" and "end of the world".

San Francisco's Finest 70's Punk,
By A Customer
This review is from: Died for Your Sins (Audio CD)
I had a crappy cassette tape of the orignal Avenger's EP that I taped back in the early eighties. So I'm glad to see this CD collection of San Francisco's finest 70's punk. For those who don't know: The Avengers opened for the Sex Pistols last show at Winterland in SF. Then slowly disappeared. Penelope Houston, the fabulous singer/songwriter has put out a few Cds in the nineties, Very unpunk but still great songwriting. Her voice can still be just as intense although more grownup, like most of us old punks.

IF YOU LIKE PUNK YOU MUST OWN THIS ALBUM!!!!,

I can't even begin to explain how great this band is!! But, first of all, yes, this CD does have more than 4 songs on it, it has 18. The Avengers were active in L.A. in the late seventies and, for the quality of their songwriting, the intelligence of the lyrics, and the ferocity of their performances, are probably the greatest punk rock band of all time. This is an album of melodic, socially-conscious, late-seventies-style punk songs, some from that period, some recently recorded, and I can't even tell you how good it is, you just have to hear it for yourself. Every fan of punk rock should own this album.

The ultimate Avengers compilation remains the self-titled "Pink" album originally released on CD records twenty years ago (Geez, I feel OLD!). This record, however, isn't far behind. The first two songs are rehearsal tracks originally released on a Sweedish 7". While poorly recorded, both are every bit as good as any of their classic singles. I especially like "Friends of Mine". "The Good The Bad and the Kowalskis", which I assume was written for the late Mike Kowalski of U.X.A., is also from the same rehearsal tapes. The quality of the live recordings is rough but not as bad as I had expected. There's lots of classics here, including "We Are The One" and "Car Crash". Too bad I was only about 6 years old when these songs were recorded. I would have loved to see them live.

so not only is penelope, the vocalist, the pinnicle of strong smart influential rock women ever to breathe air, but the band that backed her had the passion, brains and brawn far lacking in so called punk bands tocay. a must buy

The Avengers were so underrated. Any girl who calls herself a punk (or guy, for that matter) should bow down and praise Penelope Houston for such a tremendous gift. "I Want In" and "Friends of Mine" are standout tracks. I would recommend this to fans of X, Vice Squad, and Black Flag.

All Punk is Black music if you have a clue about Jazz and Rock 'n' Roll. There are alot of controversies about Avengers that Penolope Houston had sex with Black males before Avengers began and was even bisexual. She addressed serious issues about race and America's Christian Republic that noone would touch except Jello Biafra who also did music business with Black males. I'm definitely voting for Obama. Voting for Paul is the same thing. If you think racism is nuts, Romney has over 12 kids and today's Anarchists actually are Conservative and segregated by mostly Christian and Catholic differences. Peace! Hardcore is Black music but the whole Conservative Black religious "do the right thing" guilt trip is no help to sales. Black and Latin people like myself are alot smarter when they become Outsiders.
