Diesel Vektr by Monster On-Ear Headphones are the most unusual-looking headphones that I have ever seen, with a shiny, black, crystalline aesthetic that seems to be influenced by early twentieth-century German Expressionism or Italian Futurism. The coherent style extends from the packaging and storage case to the ear pads, plugs, and even the cable, which is triangular in section.

There are some very thoughtful details such as the rubber gaskets that allow the very comfortable yellow-lined ear pads a few degrees of play and the tight, spring-tensioned hinges on the flexible, folding headband. The cable is replaceable and the build is sturdy.

In some ways, however, form was given precedence over function. Adjusting the headband only changes the pressure on the ears and its silicone padding is too hard. Some of the details such as the tiny screws, raised lettering, and corners are sharp and the plugs can be hard to grasp. The smooth plastic showcases smudges so much that it was deemed necessary to provide a polishing cloth.

The closed backs, the thick, soft cushioning of the ear pads, and firm on-ear pressure combine to make a tight seal so they do a truly excellent job of blocking out noise compared to most other on-ear headphones and even on par with a majority of over-the-ear and in-ear models. The closed backs also intensify the bass but at the expense of perceived soundstage and ambience. They are fairly efficient and a portable MP3 player can make the bass thumpy even with the volume set at a moderate level.

Yes, these headphones are definitely intended to showcase bass but surprisingly, they come up a bit short on nuance and detail in the low and mid-ranges when listening to something like the "Rolling Thunder" track from "The Fog of War" or Aretha Franklin's "Save Me". In interesting contrast, the higher ranges are crisp enough to make voices stand out.

Overall, the Diesel Vektr by Monster On-Ear Headphones are well-suited for active urban use and are perhaps even ideal for listening to music on the subway, with their attention-getting design, excellent noise-exclusion, and ability to put out plenty of heavy bass with still-intelligible vocals.

Diesel Vektr Headphones by Monster are some of the most unique looking (and great sounding) headphones on the market. The sound quality is really nice and I was impressed by the clear acoustics that was not drowned out by an overuse of bass that many expensive headphones tend to do. Also, at first I was worried that the headphones might be a bit flashy, but surprisingly the design was unique yet simple and clean.

The headphones wrap your ears nicely muting outside noise extremely well. I found the sound to be a great mix of tones and while the bass was strong it was not overbearing. You are almost taken out of your surroundings and put into your world of music/video watching/etc. They really are that good.

The overall design is nice. The headphones collapse fairly easily so they can be put into a zipper case. I would have concerns about wear and tear with the way they collapse. It's just a tad bit flimsy and feels like it could wear with time. While the lines and edges of the headphones are very straight and boxy, I find the design to be nice. Very clean lines, slick black plastic and just a well rounded appearance. Like many things that have a high price point, the packing and unboxing was an experience of its own. I tend to think that more simple packaging would help lower costs, but I also understand that high-end items need to be sold as high-end.

With the excellent sound quality and overall appearance, I would certainly recommend the Diesel Vektr headphones. If you are looking for a wonderful sound, drop your in ear headphones and pick up a real pair, like the Diesel Vektr.

Inside the box for these headphones is a note from Vektr about combing the best audio sound with the most stylistic design by Diesel. Admittedly, these headphones are sexy. They come in a really nice carton box that opens up like a present to reveal the manuals and the somewhat hard carrying travel case with the folded headphones. Unfortunately, the carrying case only fits the headphones themselves not the cord that connects the headphones to the device of your choice. Thus, if you were to take the carrying case with you, you'd have to hide the cord separately elsewhere.

Once you open the carrying case, you'll find the headphones folded just so (there are actually instructions on how to properly fold these headphones). You can tell that the powers-that-be worked on stylistically making these headphones gorgeous. Wearing the headphones makes me feel futuristic somehow. the design is ultra stylish and looks good on men and women of any age (I recruited a few test subjects to see how they would look in them).

As far as functionality of the headphones goes, they are made of plastic and leather and are, therefore, easy to clean. In fact, they come with their own lint wiping cloth. The leather piece is quite comfortable to wear and cushions the ears quite nicely, which provides a snug fit and comfortable listening experience.

But looks and comfort only take a pair of headphones so far.

As far as the performance of the headphones is concerned, I was surprised that they didn't block out all the outside noise. In fact, although I couldn't hear any noise from the headphones if someone else was wearing them and listening to music, I could hear it when people were talking to me while I was wearing the headphones. clearly, this is a nice safety issue, but I would prefer headphones that practically block out all outside noise so that I can focus precisely on the audio I'm listening to.

Hooking up the headphones to take phone calls was pretty exciting, but again one could still hear the outside a bit while talking on the phone.

Overall, the rating of this item comes down to value. These are very stylish, quite comfortable, somewhat good at noise reductions headphones. But are they worth a quarter of a thousand dollars? If you are buying them for function and performance, I would recommend shopping around somewhat longer; however, if style is the main concern, these are probably as sexy as a pair of headphones are likely to get.
