Book Description

December 28, 2010

Read Nancy Redd's blogs and other content on the Penguin Community.

The New York Times bestselling author of Body Drama addresses anxieties young women face about weight, diet, exercise, and body image.

At a time when both obesity and eating disorders are on the rise, Harvard graduate and former Miss Virginia Nancy Redd provides a much- needed resource for millions of young women and concerned parents. In her uniquely reassuring "big sister" voice and with a fresh, fun, and frank attitude that has made her the nation's go-to girl for body issues, Nancy addresses the common, painful, and shameful "diet dramas" that most mainstream diet and nutrition books miss, including: "I think I'm healthy, but medical charts say I'm not"; "I can't afford a gym so I can't exercise properly"; and "I just want to have weight loss surgery and be done with it."

Nancy's advice is vetted by a leading adolescent medicine expert and the book is packed with informative "fast facts," moving personal anecdotes of Nancy's own diet experiences, and revolutionary real-deal four-color photographs of young women sized 2 to 22. Finally, a food and fitness book that doesn't condescend or blame, Diet Drama begins with body image and shows readers that health comes in all shapes and sizes.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for Nancy Redd's Body Drama:

"Body Drama should be center stage in every young woman's life. It will make you love every little thing about your body: your sags, you tags, your lumps, your bumps. It's a book of liberation and it's fun."
-Eve Ensler

"I love this book! It puts loving (and knowing) your body into words and pictures -- you'll find out yours isn't so different after all. Body Drama has the answers you want to the questions you don't know how to ask. Fun and frank, like talking to a good friend who knows absolutely everything and is willing to dish."
-Kim Gandy, President of the National Organization of Women

"In Body Drama, Nancy Redd combines the stylishness of Naomi Campbell, the vibe of your best friend, and photos you always wanted to see but were afraid to ask. An empowering, original, funny, and frank book, Body Drama is poised to become the modern girl's Our Bodies, Ourselves."
-Jennifer Baumgardner and Amy Richards, authors of Manifesta: Young Women, Feminism, and the Future and Grassroots: A Field Guide to Feminist Activism.

``Perfecto. This is just what girlitas need today--a get-real guide with un-airbrushed photos that allows them to dialogue with their bodies on the most honest levels."
-Deborah Gregory, author, The Cheetah Girls series and Catwalk

"Body Drama...should be on the shelf of every family, school, and doctor in America."
-Nancy Brown, PhD, professor of Adolescent Sexuality at Stanford University, Senior Research Associate at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) Research Institute

"Demystifies female bodies and shows them as they really look: curvy, sometimes pimply and never perfect."
-Glamour magazine

"This honest, funny, and lucidly-written book is the perfect antidote to a culture constantly teaching young women to angst about their bodies. This liberating call speaks directly to the worries and concerns that most of us have, offering a perspective and solutions that will help girls and young women figure out what REALLY matters to them. And maybe the world will be that much saner as a result."
-Judy Norsigian, Executive Director of Our Bodies Ourselves and co- author of Our Bodies, Ourselves

"I would have loved to have a book, written by someone who presumably is completely confident about her own body (she won the swimsuit competition, after all), that addressed all the questions I had about my changing body... If I had a young teenage girl in my life [Body Drama] would be at the top of my list of gifts for her."
-Catherine Price of Broadsheet on Salon.com

"Alexis and [Jennifer] both think [Body Drama] is terrific for teenage girls who are embarrassed to ask certain questions...Jennifer said that they were sitting upstairs and Alexis handed her a book with 36 names for vulva, which was the external part of a vagina. Nicknames like bird's nest, cha cha, jelly, muff, rosebud etc. Jennifer said that below the names were 24 close ups of vulvas...Alexis said that the book was really good for answering questions about the body."
-The "Whatever with Alexis and Jennifer" Sirius Radio Show

"I think this will be an amazing resource for girls to find the answers to things I wish I had known a long time ago. There's just vital information here that I can't believe I've gone this long without knowing."
-Anonymous teen reader

As the host, creator, and producer of a health network, [...] I read four to six new books on health a week and I was ecstatic to read "Diet Drama" by New York Times Best Selling author of "Body Drama."

Diet Drama is exactly what we need in our culture of airbrushed models and the picture of health being six pack abs and perfect tone. Diet Drama starts with "Love Your Body" which is so key for girls and women. From there Diet Drama talks about feeding your body and loving your body. There are photos of real women in all shapes and sizes with great photos of them engaging in exercises, learning the difference between whole foods and processed foods, and so much more. Author Nancy Redd shares personal stories and stresses how important it is to not wait for your life to begin when you lose weight.

Eat healthy, move your body, feel good about your body. These things are key!!

In addition ot the multi-media programming, I have worked as a health educator, lifestyle coach, nutritional consultant, teacher, weight management instructor, exercise physiologist and personal trainer for 20 years. This book is the BEST book on diet I have ever seen. I think it should be in every school in the country!

If you have a pre-teen girl, get this book. If you are a teen or a woman in her 20's, get this book. If you are over 20, get this book. I also think it is an important book for young men to read as well.

Also, it's fun to read!

Nancy Redd is an amazing young woman who is helping to change the pressures women feel to fit the ideal.

This book is a such a breath of fresh air. The author uses *real* young women as models, and talks honestly about how to healthfully be in-shape and treat your body right. This is the only diet book I would ever give a young woman, and frankly, the best I've ever seen.

Also, she's funny!

Excellent book! January 9, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Diet Drama is another excellent book by Nancy Redd. She has really done a great job of addressing common issues that women have with body image and dieting. I think her text is accessible for pre-teens/teens and adult women alike! What I enjoyed most about this text is that she does an excellent job of infusing her own experiences and struggles with weight and dieting. I know I could relate to many of the experiences she presented and think that young women will definitely benefit from reading this book. It would be an excellent addition to any classroom library as well as a great buy for a teenage daughter!
