Actress Principal (The Body Principal and The Beauty Principal offers women sensible if not original weight-loss advice. With minimum verbiage, she outlines a sustained 30-Day Diet to Lose for substantial weight loss; a seven-day Bikini Diet for quick weight loss; and a Diet for Life, a philosophy of nutritious eating habits. Helpful diet strategies, charts tracing food sources of vitamins and minerals and their functions in the body, and upbeat "Diet Principles" and aphorisms ("The most important question you can ask yourself about any food is not 'Is this fattening?' but rather 'What does this do for my body?' ") will help women attain nutritional awareness and control over their lives. Principal's simple, delicious recipes (in menus for dinners of eight, buffets for 16, etc.) are the best part of the book and range from cheese-stuffed trout, lemon-lime chicken and curried spinach rice to green-bean guacamole and trifle. Unfortunately, calorie counts are omitted. Literary Guild selection.

YAThe Diet Principal is a good example of a healthy diet. Principal has researched three levels of nutritional eating: the ``Diet for Life,'' or maintenance regime; the ``30-Day Diet to Lose''; and its subset the 7-day ``Bikini Diet.'' She provides ten basic principles of nutrition which include ``Know what's in what you eat'' and ``Learn the difference between dieting to lose weight and dieting as a nutritious way of eating to maintain weight.'' She also examines nutrition from the usual topics (vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates) to ``Things we don't need'' (fat, cholesterol, sugar, sodium); charts listing the nutritional value or non-value are included, providing strong support for the regimen. The diets themselves include both daily menus and recipes that are purportedly quick and easy. The book concludes with a chapter on entertaining and eating out. This book offers YA's both a diet that they can use and a reference tool for health and nutrition assignments. Dorcas Hand, Episcopal High School, Bellaire
