common sense dieting, January 5, 2004
This review is from: Dieting in Real Life: 101 Tips and Inspiration for a Healthier You (Paperback)
Ellyn Sanna has written on many subjects from a Christian perspective, and in this book tackles the rocky road of dieting, and is refreshing in her down to earth overview of the subject.
The Introduction is about how we are so often judged by our appearance, but how a walk through an art museum will show us what is considered attractive changes "drastically from century to century"; unfortunatelly so many of us feel like a perfect Rubens trapped in a Barbie world, and Chapter One is on how to get beyond this mindset by not letting the "world's passing fashions define your worth".
It is full of "Diet Tips" and "Diet Facts" that are helpful, as well as some well chosen quotes, many from the Bible, that are edifying to read.
Ellyn explains fat vs. sugar vs. complex carbohydrates, and advises against going on diets that exclude entire food groups, such as fruits, vegetables or carbohydrates, and gives sensible reasons for this.
There is a "Diet Hint" that I find useful on page 118, that shows us how we can estimate portion sizes by using our hand, Chapter Four is on how best to start an exercise program, and Chapter Five is on how stress, emotions, guilt and boredom affect our eating, and how to change those habits.
"see your body as a valuable tool God has entrusted to your use", and your food as a blessing, avoiding the pitfalls of fad diets and bad habits; with nice quality paper and a readable layout and font size, this is a fine little book to inspire us to eat and live in good health.
