Book Description

August 20, 2005
'The celebration of Advent is possible only to those who are troubled in soul, who know themselves to be poor and imperfect, who look forward to something greater to come. For these, it is enough to wait in humble fear until the Holy One himself comes down to us, God in the child in the manger. God comes. The Lord Jesus comes. Christmas comes. Christians rejoice!' ---Dietrich Bonhoeffer Executed by the Nazis for his complicity in a plot to assassinate Hitler, Dietrich Bonhoeffer remains with us today through his writings---far-reaching ripples of deep thought, passionate words, and unflinching character. Including biographical insights, Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Christmas Sermons spans Bonhoeffer's seventeen years as a preacher. This collection of vintage sermons and writings searches out the power and mystery of the Christmas season: its joyous riches and its implications for our lives. Also available Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Prison Poems Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Meditations on Psalms

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Instead of the usual "gentle Jesus, meek and mild," Bonhoeffer’s writings ask the reader to think deeply about the meaning of the incarnation in light of a world that is fallen, dangerous, and hostile to God’s kingdom.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Christmas Sermons, December 8, 2010

This review is from: Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Christmas Sermons (Hardcover)
The sermons are good because they are Bonheoffer, but Zondarvan's deceptive packaging of a bunch of non-advent and 2 christmas sermons together under the label Christmas Sermons is just wrong. This was a complete waste of money for what I purchased it for. Why not lump a bunch of sermons on Easter together and call them sermons for thanksgiving!

4.0 out of 5 stars Christmas Sermons? sort of, December 3, 2009
This review is from: Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Christmas Sermons (Hardcover)
Although reading sermons from the different phases of ministry in the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer is fun and enlightening, the book is mistitled. This book is packaged to sell at this time of year. At best, the Bonhoeffer material is from Advent, not Christmas, and even then, several pieces are not even Advent sermons.

The compilation as it is currently titled is designed to sell this time of year, shame on you Zondervan, and what is lost is the true content - a random list of sermons and devotionals piecing together the growth of Bonhoeffer in his different ministry settings. That should have been enough to sell the book.

A more apt title would have been something like, Tracing the Ministries of Dietrich Bonhoeffer with an Advent Emphasis.
