Go to LanternNet,com. There is some good information (information / generally asked questions section on the home page) on the different types of fuel and how they affect lantern performance and wick trimming. One of both may have caused the "poor performance".

We bought two of these for accent lighting on our patio. The Tiki torch fuel we tried was terrible. When it did burn it smoked like a smudge pot.
I went to the local hardware store and asked about 'kerosene lantern fuel" The guy who owns our local hardware store is knowledgeable (thank goodness). He steered me to the smokeless fuel. The smokeless was quite a bit more money but lived up to it's name. The lanterns no longer puff soot. What's more, the flame/light output may be adjusted. Not the case with the poor quality Tiki fuel. These lanterns are attractive in a neo industrial sort of way but also functional if you use the correct fuel!

I happened to live in a situation in my life with no electricity and we used Dietz lanterns all the time. I remember this as being the main one on the kitchen table. I swear, no matter what setting you put this lantern at (even just a barely visible flame) the globe will be mostly black a few hours later. Pure junk.
