1.0 out of 5 stars Sloppy paint job revealing a fraud!, August 24, 2011
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
When I the lantern arrived from Amazon, it was poorly packaged. It was only in a single box (not double boxed) and the box was BARELY big enough for the lantern. The box was literally bulging top and bottom with the lantern inside. There was only ONE air pillow type packaging cushion in the box and two very thin pieces of corrugated cardboard around the lamp. One piece was around the chimney and one piece was around the glass. When I opened the box, I expected to find broken glass and bent metal. Surprisingly, the glass was not broken and overall the lamp didn't appear to be broken.

Immediately I noticed that the paint was not smooth and even. It looked as if there had been kerosene (or some fluid) spilled on the lantern. Rather than a smooth, black finish the paint had dark gray smears on it...ALL OVER the lantern! I started to think that this lantern may have been previously owned/used and returned. Then sold as NEW.

Then I saw that this lamp wasn't even originally black...it had been painted RED! So they spray painted black over the red paint. I first noticed red paint overspray under the chimney. I also saw red paint under the black paint at the points where two pieces of metal join (e.g. where the tubes connect to the fount and the chimney)! In addition to all that, there were areas in several places on the lantern that had scratches and scuffs revealing RED PAINT underneath. So on top of all else, the lantern arrived to me scratched and scuffed! Running my hand over the lantern revealed that the paint job was sloppy overall anyway because there were clear signs that dust and/or debris had been on the lamp when it was painted black. The black paint had rough areas (like there had been sand on the lantern when it was painted black).

Finally, I removed the fuel cap to look inside the fount and what do you suppose I found? Nope...not more red paint...RUST!! The fuel tank was RUSTY inside!

A lantern was sold as NEW but was in fact: Rusty inside, previously painted another color, and scrached.

The lantern had all the new Dietz tags and labels on it; however, the Dietz hologram label that is put on the fount had a ripple in it indicating it was attached poorly. It even came in a sealed plastic bag with a Dietz logo on it.

Dietz used to be the top name in American designed cold-blast lanterns. I received this one from Amazon who got it from a company called 21 Century. I'm not sure about this 21 Century company is or what kind of con job they're trying to pull on us but BEWARE and STAY AWAY!

Get ready, Amazon! This one's coming back to you.

4.0 out of 5 stars it works, is fairly bright, not hard to use., November 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
my lantern arrived fine, looks fine, works fine.
the globe was a little dirty when it arrived so i cleaned it, it's edges are a little rough but i did it w/o cutting myself.

it's full of 1-k kerosene right now and burns fine on that, my only real complaint, and i knew this before i bought:

proud american company, proudly importing all it's lanterns from china since the '50s
if i was going to buy foreign, i chose furerhand, but they seemed quite a bit harder to find. settled for this.

as a side note: mine was also a 21st importer, but it was rust free and does not appear to be a repaint.

3.0 out of 5 stars They work.., November 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Both lanterns arrived very well packed, in timely manner and with extra globes from century 21 intact. There were no scratches, damage and I did check the tanks, and these are two new lanterns. I am guessing this are made of an aluminum type material. Dietz did change their factories to China sometime ago. So, I was not expecting the rugged old well made Dietz lanterns. The "Dietz laser" brand on the globe was intact on arrival until I softly cleaned the globes with damp paper towel. Pieces of the brand name began to fall apart and come off way too easily for anything that has been lasered glass into. So, these were not laser into the globes. These are knock offs.

That being said, both lanterns were easy to set up. They are both filled with kerosene and are working well. They come with a good wick. Long term use is as questionable as the Dietz name brand falling off with a damp paper towel. There is no doubt that I will use these, but they do have to be backed up by lanterns that one knows will be truly reliable for years to come.
