This guy invented a genre. He took Hip Hop beats, electro rhythyms, and jacked their I.Q.'s, brought in the "intelligent" elements. The melodic keyboards, the synth waves. If you live in or near Florida and have not heard DJ Icey, then you might be qualified to serve on the jury in the Scott Peterson trial. Ive seen this guy from the beginning, he's definetly one of the top dance music producers.

5.0 out of 5 stars DJ Icey show's us why he is the true 'King of Breaks', March 20, 2003
This review is from: Different Day (Audio CD)
II've been a fan of DJ Icey since 1995, when I first discovered his music Icey was, at the time one of (if not the only) US artists producing breaks that were on par with UK talent. I was in awe. From his re-mixes of `Beach Ball', Groove Armada, Orbital, etc Icey always brings the funky breaks (pun intended).

When I first picked up `Generate' in 1997, I could not believe it, `Generate' was is and will always be a seminal piece of electronic music, if you own this CD you know what I mean, if you don't you should get a copy immediately, and experience the genius first hand!

During the last 5 years, Icey has release a hand full of DJ mixed compilations which really bring the club experience home, and if you have ever heard this man spin live, you know without a doubt that Icey is a man that gets the rumps shaking and energy level through the roof. And so I waited for the new album of original music....

`Different Day'...There really is something for everyone (electronic music fans) here from the vocal styling of Jen Lasher on the title cut, to (in my opinion) the smash hits Searching (AMAZING!) and Dreams both featuring Melanie Rev.

Icey also delivers a bunch of tunes for the heads, Freaks in the House, will no doubt be the Breaks anthem for 2003 and Sinewave is smoking as well.

Enough from me, you can tell I'm a huge DJ Icey fan, and I love this record. Thanks Icey, worth the wait!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, March 20, 2003
This review is from: Different Day (Audio CD)
well you obviously havent realized that essential mix wasnt his original music it was just remixes of others. So if you dont own or like his original cds like break to the dance vol 1 & 2 or generate. Which all 3 have lots of lyrics(most funky breaks do)dont judge his cds.

3.0 out of 5 stars Icey can't out do... Icey, April 24, 2003

If you live in or near Florida and have not heard DJ Icey, then you might be qualified to serve on the jury in the Scott Peterson trial. This guy defined a genre - Funky Breaks - a fusion of electro, Miami bass, hip-hop samples, bubblegum vocals, and funky synths. Icey's tunes were played week in and week out at seminal clubs like Simon's, Firestone, the Edge, and Late Night Library. In fact, they still are today.

His latest offering is well... OK. The production is tight and it is his most polished effort. However, it just does not stand up to his previous work. I mean nothing on this album can surpass records like "Love," "Sonic Party," "Low Down Good Girl," "Big Ditch," or "Emerald." Granted these tracks were fairly unsophisticated, but they were drenched in energy and emotion.

Icey did not decide to give "Electro Morning" a facelift on this album for nothing. This track rocked with its stabbing laser, mellow booty bassline, and eery robotic voice sample.

All in all, it is a good buy for someone new to breaks who is not familiar with Icey's previous work. If you are interested in what I believe is his best album, it has a solid black jewel case and simply said DJ Icey on it. I used to own it, lost it, and it is now out of print. If you ever run across it, offer anything short of a limb to get a copy. Ok, maybe an arm or a kidney. It is that good.

Much respect to the true King of Breaks.

dj icey is the creator of this genre and in many people's mind own the world of break-beats so he's experimenting with his style as long as he's been in the business I'd expect nothing less now from reading the other reviews it looks like a lot of people are trying to compare this to the essential mix but that cd is the work of many people put together that many breakbeat legends put on stage with an awsome director such as Icey nothing less should happen but with one man's mind at work this cd is Icey at his best even if yall don't like it the first time you hear it don't come on hear and put it down listen to it some more and you will realize that Icey is ahead of his time and his evolution of the style will lead many more to follow the king of break-beat music! TRUST ME!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Different DJ Icey, October 24, 2008
This review is from: Different Day (Audio CD)
If you've been listening to D.J. Icey, you'll find this album different from what you've been hearing. This is a different D.J. Icey, in that the music is not connected together as in past albums. Each piece is unique, but has a general theme of being quieter, more thought provoking, more internally visual. I've always loved the arrangement of music on his past albums, where you can dance till the floor gives out from under you. This isn't a laid back D.J. Icey, or mellow D.J. Icey, or even a quietly thoughtful D.J. Icey. It's a Different Day.

If you like your breaks funky dark and electro fueled while at the same time having some celestial vibe this is it. This is my breaks album of the year. Great to hear someone representing the American breaks scene without the NuSkool sound thats penetrating most breakbeat these days.

For all you Icey fans who are used to hearing more upbeat danceable breaks, this album will definetly surprise you. This is more chilled out, mellow style breaks and most people wont understand the message behind this album.Allow me to explain. The whole purpose of this cd was to let his fans know that he was permanently coming down and cleaning up his act, while changing his music style.I have to give him an A for effort and you should too, check it out why dontcha. If you like dance music, chances are you'll like this, get it

Coming off the essentials "the breaks element", which really is mind blowing, This is WAY subpar. I was thoroughly disappointed with this release. He played a show in Charlotte 3 days after I bought the CD and only 1 track did he spin (track 7). The king of breaks will certainly be dethroned if he has another release like this one. C'mon Icey, you know better than this. Make way for the Plump DJs and Hyper. He tried to do some innovative stuff, but it needs something... Maybe a new track listing. Sorry Icey, you can still blow it up live. What happened bro? It hurts my feelings.
