A Different Kind of Love is a rare book, a collection of beautifully crafted love stories whose characters just happen to share the same sex. Although author Jay Mandal does explore the special difficulties encountered by gay men who fall in love, the anthology’s main focus is upon unabashed romance. Character gender apart, the book is one of love and not of the political complaint or seedy sex so common of the genre.

A fine book with unbelievable tenderness. Each story takes the reader on a love journey with compassion and understanding. I enjoyed every story and found that the more I read the better I liked these stories. With delicacy and wisdom each story has focus. What brings us all closer is why and how we love. In each story the lovers have faults with strengths, just like we all do. Gay love is not different and in reading these stories I could see that love changes each of us, sometimes for better and sometimes not. In reality, love is true companionship and understanding. Don't make me pick a favorite story because I liked all of them. If you haven't tried this excellent book, do so now. It is worth every moment of your reading time.

It's easy to admire what Jay Mandal is trying to achieve in his collection of short stories A Different Kind of Love. Rather than a salacious or tragic representation of love between gay men, the world Mandal creates is one of romance. Here, hunky men ask you for coffee then take you on holiday, people who meet as friends gradually find that they have deeper feelings and two people can share one lover and remain happy. His characters, whether in the first flush of youth or entering middle age, always find love where they least expect. There are struggles and misunderstandings, but love wins out and boy always gets boy in the end. If finally there is equality of gender and sexuality, then teenage magazines for queer boys will be filled with stories like these, sweet and innocent yarns that demurely fade to black as the bedroom door opens. ..........
