5.0 out of 5 stars Creative, Engaging, Realistic, August 29, 2001

This review is from: A Different Kind of Strength: Rediscovering the Power of Being a Woman (Hardcover)
"A Different Kind of Strength" is a different kind of book. While Oprah Winfrey and radical feminism have touched the desire of women for personal success and self-fulfillment, they have left women in a dry and barren place. "A Different Kind of Strength" reminds women that "any philosophy or form of deceptive thinking which places self at the center instead of adopting the servants posture modeled by Christ is diametrically opposed to the wisdom of God and doomed to fail." However, the writers of this book make it clear that "radical feminists did not invent the idea of the powerful woman. God did."
The authors unveil the powerful "stories" of the five women listed in the lineage of Jesus Christ: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba and Mary. They show through the lives of these women how God uses women to accomplish His will. Their stories reveal the fact that neither our personal limitations nor our extenuating circumstances can thwart God's sovereign plan for our lives.
"A Different Kind of Strength: is creative and engaging while also being realistic and applicable to where we live. This book is a "must" read for today's Christian woman.

5.0 out of 5 stars They were just like us!, December 30, 2001
This review is from: A Different Kind of Strength: Rediscovering the Power of Being a Woman (Hardcover)
Frightened, tired, not understanding. Facing impossible situations without a map, not knowing what to do. Struggling through their heartbreaks - and triumphs. In the midst of it all, finding a strength beyond themselves. Discovering on a personal basis the presence of an eternal God involved in their lives. . . and, when looking back and pondering all that had happened, seeing His footprints walking beside them each step of the way.

Beverly Lahaye and Janice Shaw write about five women from Bible times, putting flesh upon the skeleton of words, breathing life into the forms. Only women who have, themselves, walked through uncharted territory and discovered the faithfulness of God in their own lives could bring these Bible characters to life.

These two authors have done a wonderful job of doing just that!
This is a book I will keep to read again!

"A Different Kind of Strength" is a different -- and wonderful --kind of book. In a novel and powerful way, it retells the stories of five biblical heroines, and shows how God worked through the strengths and weaknesses of each one. From these unforgettable women, we learn the power -- not of perfection -- but of faith, hope, obedience, courage and wisdom. This book can provide guidance to all of us struggling to live well, and do right, in a fallen world.

This review is from: A Different Kind of Strength: Rediscovering the Power of Being a Woman (Hardcover)
A Different Kind of Strength: Rediscovering the Power of Being a Woman, is fascinating and inspirational reading that goes beyond the scriptures to bring five women of the Bible to life. You will thoroughly enjoy reading about Rahab, Tamar, Bathsheba, Ruth and Mary as you gain new insights into their lives. Once you have read A Different Kind of Strength, you will always remember how God used these ordinary women. You will be inspired to see how God can use each of us regardless of our own weaknesses. I highly recommend this book by two talented writers, Beverly LaHaye and Janice Shaw Crouse.

Beverly LaHaye's and Janice Crouse's collaboration on "A Different Kind of Srength" is superb! Mrs. LaHaye and Mrs. Crouse carefully analyze the character traits of five Biblical women to show contemporary women what it means to be truly powerful. This book is a must-read for any woman who has ever questioned her own strength and power.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and Inspiring!, August 15, 2001

This review is from: A Different Kind of Strength: Rediscovering the Power of Being a Woman (Hardcover)
How refreshing to read about women who were human but were also used to accomplish God's purposes!

In "A Different Kind of Strength," LaHaye and Crouse examine the biblical records of the five women named in Matthew's genealogy of Christ and apply their qualities to issues faced by women of today. The writers demonstrate how God often "chooses unlikely people to accomplish His purposes."

Captivating fictionalized stories of these women are based on scriptural accounts and accurate historical information. In them we see authentic human beings with needs, fears, passions, hopes, and hurts just like our own. "These stories demonstrate that God is at work even when lives are falling apart," and can help women of today "discover more about the powerful ways God can use [their] unique gifts and abilities during our own time in history."

The life of Tamar illustrates the power of courage and fortitude. Rahab's account is characterized by wisdom and boldness. Ruth's devotion and obedience have made her a role model for many generations. The beauty and endurance of Bathsheba were key factors in her story. And the purity and humility of Mary the mother of Jesus have become legendary.

Each story helps the reader to walk familiar paths with the characters we have read about so often, and to hear words from the mouths of those who before were just names on a page of the Bible. We feel with the characters and understand their actions. These are related then to other biblical situations, as well as to current issues.

LaHaye and Crouse have done a masterful job of bringing the Scriptures to life and applying the lessons and insights to practical Christian living. They show God at work in all of the details of our lives--"to create something good out of what seemed only difficult and painful." I highly recommend the book!

This review is from: A Different Kind of Strength: Rediscovering the Power of Being a Woman (Hardcover)
A Different Kind of Strength delves into the lives of the five women listed in Matthew's genealogy of Jesus. Crouse and LaHaye have written an insightful and intriguing book about these women-their weakness and their strengths. The naming of these five women of all the women who contributed to the lineage of Christ has always intrigued me. Among them are liars, harlots, pagans, schemers and such. Sound familiar!? Right! They are as we and therein lies hope and help for us all.
