5.0 out of 5 stars This More-zart CD should be 10 stars out of five.
I have been listening to this CD for quite a while and I still like it. It never bores me. First, the transcriptions are done ingeniusly. Second, all the works are done by different musicians and thus the the play styles are all different. This is really QUITE A DIFFERENT More-zart. For example, Ruhe Sanft is an aria in 3/4, but it is beautifully transcribed in 4/4...

3.0 out of 5 stars Quirky Mozart album winds up charming me..
This is definately not your grandfather's versions of Mozart. The artists change up the instrumentation and creatively put new life in such classics of "Elvira Madigan", "Ruhe Sanft" and "Eine Kleine Nachmusik". Good enough for a listen if you want to hear someting new.

I have been listening to this CD for quite a while and I still like it. It never bores me. First, the transcriptions are done ingeniusly. Second, all the works are done by different musicians and thus the the play styles are all different. This is really QUITE A DIFFERENT More-zart. For example, Ruhe Sanft is an aria in 3/4, but it is beautifully transcribed in 4/4. At first listening, I didn't know what it was, but it sounded like I heard it before, and I couldn't figure it out. Only after I checked the song list and tried second careful listening, I was able to be aware that it was indeed "Ruhe Sanft mein holdes Leben". Every piece in this CD is beatiful. I am sorry that I can give only five stars. I will definitely give it 10 starts out of five. I wish there would be "A Different Mozart II".

If you love Mozart, try this album. Interpreters such as Bela Fleck give us a chance to appreciate the enduring beauty of the music, and all of the selections are beautiful in their own way. Each of the pieces is too short for my taste, but that does allow for many different interpreters on the CD. I'll definitely buy the follow up to this album.

I first heard this CD while having massage therapy. It was wonderfully relaxing to listen to, and I was so impressed by it, that I jotted the title down so I could buy it for myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous! Beautiful, moving interpretations of Mozart., July 29, 1998

If you enjoy both classical and jazz music, then try this CD! Lovely, sensitive arrangements with non-traditional ensembles (including a banjo!) present a different "feel" from the typical classical genre. This CD has a distinct, but understated, jazzy feel. I found one or two of the selections to be somewhat tedious (e.g., "Lacrymosa" - Track 4), but most are very satisfying to listen to over and over. I personally do not use this CD as "background" music, but for listening with "focus" - the arrangements are too carefully executed and too sweet to waste. It is difficult to pick favorite selections, but three I absolutely love are "Love So Sincere" (Track 6), "Adagio for Glass Harmonica" (Track 9), and "Andante from Serenade No. 12" (Track 11).

Bela Fleck's banjo on "Rondo" (Track 10) is the most skillfully executed banjo picking I have ever heard (I play the banjo myself). How ca! n a banjo capture Mozart? Well, Bela Fleck does it superbly! My interest was first captured by the Modern Mandolin Quartet's performance of "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" heard over the local classical radio station. Wow! Here was a fresh serving of an old favorite! My curiosity was instantly piqued. After getting the CD, I was not disappointed. The music combines the timeless compositions of one of the greatest musical composers ever with the skillful work of current musicians to provide beautiful interpretations. I consider some of the numbers to be very romantic - entirely fitting for candlelight with your true love. If music can bring tears to your eyes, then you will be thrilled with this CD.

My only complaint is that the selections are too short (true of many CD's). Because of this, there is a lack of continuity in the themes and moods (again true of many CD's). It would be a treat to have the entire original compositons arranged in the manner done for t! hese individual movements.

It is a lot of fun to compare! these arrangements with the more strictly classical interpretations - especially if you really appreciate both classical and new age/jazz. This CD most certainly deserves a prime spot in your library.

Just when you think there is nothing more that can be done with Mozart, along comes this album. The interpretations are so fresh and different that I felt I was relearning Mozart. I think he would be very proud.
