Biography

Here We Go Magic spent the better part of 2011 putting together "A Different Ship" with producer Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Beck). The resulting album is sunny and spacious, with "How Do I Know" as its molten core. With its instantly hummable refrain, the song builds layer by layer from a simple guitar-vocals-drums combo into a swirling symphony of glorious noise.

Editorial Reviews

With the help of super producer Nigel Godrich, A Different Ship is Here We Go Magic's most remarkable and captivating album yet, with an emotional and musical arc that is alternately calming and anxiety-inducing, and often both at once. "I Believe In Action" and "Make Up Your Mind" sound like they're being beamed in from outer space, while more earthbound tracks such as "Miracle of Mary," "Over The Ocean" and "Alone But Moving" amble in a somnolent haze, with Temple's cool timbre cutting through the fog.

4.0 out of 5 stars Here We Go Magic expands its musical horizons September 29, 2012
Format:Audio CD
When looking at what direction to go into after its initial two albums (both of which were well received), New York-based Here We Go Magic took a calculated but huge gamble: it called on Nigel Godrich, the producer and unofficial 6th member of Radiohead. Now comes the band's third studio album, which was mixed and produced by Godrich.

"A Different Ship" (10 tracks; 43 min.) kicks off with a 1 min. instrumental, and then dives straight into "Hard To Be Close". "Make Up Your Mind" is a hard-charging track, with multiple layers of guitars and synths. Next comes "Alone But Moving", on which lead singer Luke Temple sounds just like, and I mean exactly like, Radiohead's Thom Yorke. "I Believe in Action" is another Radiohead-reminding song. "Over the Ocean" is a beautiful, sparse ballad. "Made To Be Old" is a mid-tempo, synthesizer-driven track. "How Do I Know" is the most traditional-sounding HWGM track on the entire album. "Miracle of Mary" is another pensive tune. It all leads to the album's closer, the epic 8 min. title track, with a 3 min. instrumental outro that will take many HWGM fans by surprise. In all, a fitting way to close out this album.

The fingers of Nigel Godrich are all over this album, which one might call the band's "experimental" album. I actually like it quite a bit, but if you are expecting a repeat of "Pigeons", you will surely be disappointed. I had the good fortune of catching Here We Go Magic in concert recently at the MidPoint music festival here in Cincinnati, and they put on a hypnotizing 45 min. set, in which they played many of the new album's tracks (including Make Up Your Mins, I Believe In Action, and the title track, just to name those). Live the new songs rock harder than anything on the studio album. Great set all around. Meanwhile, "A Different Ship" is highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Different Here We Go Magic... May 14, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Here We Go Magic's mastermind Luke Temple seems to have come to a comfortable spot on their new album A Different Ship. It's a spot where things have slowed down a bit. Time flows smoothly from one song to the next. And those krautrock tendencies he leaned on pretty heavily throughout Here We Go Magic's last long player, the excellent 2010 album Pigeons are drastically reduced this time around. If you're looking for 'Collector Part Two', you better look elsewhere. A Different Ship has more in common with Temple's solo album Don't Act Like You Don't Care. And if you've heard that, you know that's a very good thing.

A Different Ship starts out with 50 seconds of clanging and noise, as if we're in the shipyards of San Francisco, then strummed acoustic comes in and Temple sings "Well it's hard sometimes, to be close" and we are introduced to 'Hard To Be Close'. A dreamy, country-infused track that wouldn't seem out of place here, or on Paul Simon's One Trick Pony. 'Hard To Be Close' gives us a glimpse into the new sonic palette Here We Go Magic are working with. The cold, robotic perfection of Pigeons is replaced here with a feeling of warmth. A good portion of that credit can be given to this album's producer: Nigel Godrich. Godrich gives this record some much needed depth and density that previous HWGM albums lacked. Though they made up for it with pulsating beats and claustrophobic, paranoid delivery that brought to mind bands like Devo, Talking Heads and NEU!. Nigel Godrich's production magic is a nice change. And when we step into 'Make Up Your Mind', we can hear a bit of that 80s synth-heavy rhythm and robotic beats we loved so much on Pigeons, but with Godrich warming it up by his magic production fire.

The biggest change that can clearly be heard on A Different Ship is Temple's voice. The distant, often ambiguous vocal delivery on previous Here We Go Magic records is replaced with Temple's warm, Paul Simon-esque voice. He really has a unique singing voice, and it's front and center on this record. 'Along But Moving' is a singer/songwriter fare that demands several listens with headphones covering your ears. 'I Believe In Action' brings back a bit of the robotic funk, with an angular guitar part and Temple's ghostly falsetto floating over the action. Side one closes with the delicate 'Over The Ocean', with a Radiohead In Rainbows vibe to this track it's a beautiful way to close out this half of the album. Side two opens up with 'Made To Be Old', a sneaky little song with noises coming in and out, left to right, all the while Temple keeps us centered with his vocal delivery. 'How Do I Know' takes a jangly guitar and a 'four on the floor' beat and turns them into one of the best summer songs of 2012. The record ends with the sublime title track. "She's on another ship, for Heaven, Got a ticket there from Lucifer himself", Temple sings over a quiet ride cymbal and a flanged guitar. It's the definitive period at the end of Here We Go Magic's musical statement of 2012.

Some will be disappointed in the decidedly mellow trip this album takes us on. But for those that close their eyes and just enjoy the ride, you may just find yourself getting swept away with A Different Ship.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Different Ship .... a winner... May 10, 2012

This is a wonderful album by Here We Go Magic. Each song has its uniqueness, but they flow to make an entirely pleasing album. I enjoyed their earlier two albums (Here We Go Magic and Pigeons (also their EP)), but this one is really, really outstanding. It's on repeat!
