Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The title Different Stages certainly describes the career of the multitalented Sam Harris, the singer-writer-actor who has distinguished himself in a variety of mediums all over the world. This album was recorded in 1994, about when he was earning a Drama Desk nomination for his role as Doody in Tommy Tune's Grease, and accordingly, it celebrates the songs of Broadway. Sorry, fans, there's nothing from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, but the too-brief 35 minutes does include some groundwork for his 1999 gospel album with an a cappella quintet rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone," as well as the rousing "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat" from Guys and Dolls. There are also some scrumptious ballads, including Harris's own "Never Will She Answer" (written with Bruce H. Newberg for Hurry! Hurry! Hollywood!), "A Quiet Thing" from Flora the Red Menace, and "Who Can I Turn To," which would be reprised with bombast on his 1997 standards album, also arranged and conducted by Peter Matz. (Hey, we got all the way through this review without mentioning Star Search!) --David Horiuchi

Product Description

Masterfully recorded with full orchestra all produced, arranged and conducted by the legendary Peter Matz (i.e. Barbra Streisand etc.). Features great selections of your popular classic Broadway standards.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best that I have heard....., December 9, 2001
This review is from: Different Stages (Audio CD)
He puts feelings into all of the songs on Different Stages, but You'll Never Walk Alone is the one makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up everytime I hear it. The feeling he puts into this song, makes you realize that no matter what happens in this world, none of us are not alone, that we are all in this together. He puts so much feeling and power into his songs. That alone is enough to purchase this cd.
