One of the better pop-rock albums to close out the 80's decade...The first track, The Different Story, opens the album with a high energy feel. Surprisingly enough, it was produced by Michael Cretu of Enigma before Enigma came into existence in 1990. 3.0 out of 5 stars Synth Fluff
This is catchy 80s synth pop with a faux-futuristic theme borrowed from any cheap sci-fi comic! I love love love the song Major Tom... but come on folks! Schilling is no visionary genious and his songs aren't pointing towards any deep and hidden message. In fact, this cd is compiled from two albums Schilling released in the early 80s with one new single (Different Story)...

One of the better pop-rock albums to close out the 80's decade...The first track, The Different Story, opens the album with a high energy feel. Surprisingly enough, it was produced by Michael Cretu of Enigma before Enigma came into existence in 1990. The song also is highly reminiscent of something by OMD for a teenage brat pack film like 16 Candles or Pretty In Pink. It also feels out of place due to the different production style against the other tracks that were done by Schilling.

The most memorable track is Major Tom with it's almost lullabye-like chorus (4,3,2,1...). Everything else is very much in the German pop vein of the time with a bit of a New Wave edge...Much of the sound could also be a precursor to the techno stuff that would come out in the early 90's ! The central theme throughout the album is earth in it's final days and space or futuristic travels and explorations of mankind into the heavens/stars !

5.0 out of 5 stars A Vocal Master from the 1980s, October 20, 2002
This review is from: Different Story (Audio CD)
Peter Schilling is truely one of the greatest artists to emerge from the 1980s. Each song on this CD are enjoyable from begining to end. "Zone 804" and "Major Tom" have got to be the best tracks on a very well put together CD. Each track gives you something new, best of all none of the songs sound the same, as you might find with groups from 90s and the new millenium. Grab yourself a copy of this CD, it might not be around much longer with record companys now days letting classic albums go out of print.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peter Schilling is a hidden gem, October 13, 2000

I bought this CD because I heard the song Major Tom on a local radio station. I was fully prepared to just love this one song on this album and just add it to one of my own collection CD's (That's why I got myself a CD Burner). However after playing Major Tom about 60 times in a row I listened to the other songs and boy oh boy was I surprised. From The Different Story to The Hurricane every single song was just great. The only bad song is (let's play) U.S.A., mainly because it just doesn't fit within the other great songs. My favorite after Major Tom is Lone Survivor, a chilling song about a man locked up is his secret bunker, surviving the nuclear war but surviving for what? Being all alone and no hope to ever return to the surface of the earth. The Noah Plan is another great song, really telling the story of human kind today. If we go on like this, our only hope will be to abandon earth. This CD is a must have for everybody who enjoys music with a lot more depth than your everyday pop songs. It certainly is one of my favorites in my collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars sci-fi rock, February 20, 2000
This review is from: Different Story (Audio CD)
Peter Schilling was a visionary. He has followed in the footsteps of David Bowie in his imagination. The Different Story is a great pop song...I am pretty sure Limahl is featured on it. Major Tom is an 80's classic (4-3-2-1)..we all remember it. Other standouts include the Noah Plan, Berlin (a hauntingly beautiful song, years before it's time) and The lone Survivor. Buy this record...I think you will be very suprised. And for Peter Schilling fans, it's all we have. Peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Personal favorite, April 17, 2001

Peter Schilling, definately my favorite artist of all time. Major Tom was definately the song that turned me in his direction, as is probably the case for many of his fans. Though, after listening to the CD The Different Story, I instantly fell in love with City of Night (Berlin). Since I managed to scrounge up a copy of Different Story I've been seeking his other CDs. I must say that you don't know what you're missing if the only song of Schilling's you've heard is Major Tom. His songs have meaning, the music's unbelievable, and, most importantly, the lyrics are clean. I'd strongly reccomend this CD, along with any other Schilling CD you can get your hands on.

I began as a DJ in the 80's for my fraternity. I remember the first time that I heard A Different Story by Peter Schilling. I purchased the 12" dance remix and it became one of my dance mainstays at every event. People loved it and I loved seeing their reaction to the music. The lyrics and melody/beat are outstanding. Although I like Major Tom, I believe A Different Story is the best on the album. The rest of the songs are very good. The album is a great mix of different music. It is one of those cds that you will listen to in its entirety. I am just sorry that Peter didn't record more music.

Thats where this disc takes me to. With the exception of the last track I'd have to say that the songs on this compilation create another form of existance while they're playing. I love music that just sweeps you away and makes you forget about reality, as opposed to the stuff that merely reminds you of it. "Major Tom" is the hit single on here and enticed many, including myself, to buy this gem in the first place. I wasn't expecting much more than that song when I purchased it, but I was pleasantly surprised. "Berlin", with its ominous beginning accoustic guitar riffs and Schilling singing in a soft, almost heart-broken voice, is haunting beyond description, yet the chorus is catchy enough to bring your mood well above depression. "Terra Titanic" definitely has the same moody feel to it if a bit more upbeat, while "Zone 804" picks up the pace even more. A great chorus to that song as well. And "The Different Story", despite its shortness, has a truly epic feel and is surely the best song on the album. Overall its a really fun album to listen to, especially if you're an 80's child. I highly recommend this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ahead of his own time...Deeply Prophetic!, October 6, 2005

Guilty as charged, I am a deep lover of the synthesizer. And who best to crown the king of the synthesizer better than Peter Schilling.

In "A Different Story", the synthesizer in Schilling's hands does not become an 80's bauble-it is an instrument of great power. One cannot bear but listen to the sheer beauty in the collaboration of his lyrics and its music. No matter which track you pick on this CD, you will not be left the same.

In fact, I dare you to listen to "Hurricane (Hammers On the Shore)", and not have your blood run cold! How can you listen and not think of Andrew, Ivan, Katrina and all of the other natural water-based disasters we have seen! Quite a masterpiece in its own right!

Again, if you want to become acquainted with a man who was way ahead of his musical time, a man who should share a throne in the Mount Olympus of Alternative Music with Ian Curtis and Morrissey, please, please buy this CD!

I love this album!

I'm a huge fan of Peter Schilling and I was very happy to have ordered this CD because I have played it so much because it's such a great CD! I love the songs from start to finish and I hope to buy his 1999 German greatest hits album to go along w/ this one!

Thank you Mr. Schilling for making such great music!
